Interment will be in Fountain Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Reverend Susan Ferguson, Associate Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, will officiate the funeral services.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fifty-four years, the former Savannah Senac of Lafayette; one daughter, Jennifer Z. Melancon and her husband, Dustin, of Lafayette; three sons, Johnnie C. Zerangue, III and his wife, Emmeline, of Lafayette, Flint Zerangue, Sr. and his wife, Heidi, of Lafayette, and Chad Zerangue and his wife, Melissa, of Keller, TX; and seven grandchildren, Flint Zerangue, Jr., Johnnie C. Zerangue, IV, Katherine Zerangue, Macie Zerangue, Jack Zerangue, Addison Zerangue and Parker Zerangue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude and Johnnie C. Zerangue, Sr.

For more than four decades, Johnnie C. Zerangue, Jr. was a cornerstone in education throughout Acadiana. He graduated from UL (then SLI) in 1959 with a B.M.E. degree and later went on to earn his M.A. degree from UL (then USL). Mr. Zerangue began teaching music in St. Landry Parish at Melville High School, then later in Acadia Parish at Rayne High School. In 1977 Zerangue transferred to the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) and began teaching band at L. J. Alleman where his 7th and 8th grade bands received both local and regional acclaim, of which was having the distinction of being the first elementary band to play on the (Ryman Auditorium) Grand Ole Opry House stage in Nashville, TN. Throughout his career as a music educator, Zerangue was a past President of the Southwest Louisiana Band Directors Association, a past member and State Vice President of the National Association of Jazz Educators and was also inducted into the Phi Beta Mu National Honors Society of Professional Music Educators.

In 1977, Mr. Zerangue accepted the Assistant Principal spot at Edgar Martin Middle School. During his tenure, he continued to work with music students and was a guest director for multiple Middle and High School Honor Bands throughout the state.

In 1982 Zerangue was named principal at Lafayette High School, where his focus turned to newly developing (local and national) trends relating to high school security, youth gang activity and variations in teenage drug use. During this time, Zerangue began collaborating with local law enforcement agencies and others to help educate and formulate new school policies for campus security, many of which are still being used today.

Mr. Zerangue or “Pappa Z” (as he was affectionately call by his student body) was promoted to Director of Middle and Secondary Education for the LPSS in 1988, where he continued to work for the betterment of local education and the modernization of school security and student safety. As a leader in this newly emerging field, Zerangue periodically traveled to school systems throughout the U.S. educating school administrator’s on the subject. He served as a past member of the Crime Prevention Advisory Commission for the city of Lafayette, LA. and received certification from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Department of Juvenile Justice workshops on Youth/Gang activities, as well as Department of Juvenile Justice Training. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors for the Gulf Teaching Family Services and served on the “Site Visitation Team” for the U.S. Department of Education.

After retiring from LPSS, Zerangue accepted the Assistant Superintendents position in Columbus, Mississippi where he stayed until 2001.

Upon his return to Lafayette, Zerangue was hired by UL’s College of Education as the Coordinator of Field Experience, where he helped hundreds of student teachers find classroom experience with school systems throughout Acadiana.

Throughout the span of his career in education, Zerangue served on multiple local, state and national boards and committees. He was the past President of several local civic organizations, including Board of Directors & Treasurer of the Lafayette Schools Federal Teacher’s Credit Union, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Louisiana Schools Supervisors’ Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Louisiana Association of School Executives, Louisiana Principal’s Association and the Lafayette Parish Principal’s Association. He was also an active member and past President of the Rotary Club of Lafayette South and a past Youth Choir Director of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette.

Friends, family and colleagues will remember Mr. Johnnie for his quick wit, strong fortitude, generosity towards others and his compassion to help others succeed. His children will remember him as a humble giant of a man, one who was always guided by his faith. Zerangue truly believed that integrity, honor and respect were not just words but a way of life, and often passed this lesson on to his children, grandchildren and many students throughout the years. He will be remembered most by his family and friends as one of the last tough ones of the “John Wayne Era.”

Pallbearers will be Flint Zerangue, Jr., Johnnie C. Zerangue, IV, Jack Zerangue, Dustin Melancon, Chester Wyble and David Bearb. Honorary pallbearers will be William Blankenship and Lester Duhon.
