Coach John Robert Bell Sr., 86, passed away December 25, 2008, at the home of his daughter in Johnson City. He was born in Clinchco, VA, and raised in Kingsport, TN, the son of the late Carl & Mabel Bell. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a sister, Katharyn Riley; and a nephew, William Riley III; of Kingsport. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, lay speaker, MYF leader and Recreation Committee member. Survivors include his wife, Anne Gunnels Bell; daughters & sons-in-law, Nan & Ted Larsen, Karen & Michael Deakins; son & daughter-in-law, John & Kimberly Bell; grandchildren, Laura Larsen, Tyler Larsen, Sally Blankenship, Adam Deakins, Joey Deakins, Maggie Bell, Justin Bell; Great grandchildren, Travis Deakins, Jake Smalling, Reese Blankenship; sister, Cora Evelyn Hagood, Ocala, FL; & aunt, Virginia Coley, Kingsport. He was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, Georgia Tech & ETSU. During WWII he served 34 months as a Naval Officer in the Atlantic and Pacific, aboard hospital ships. He was later recalled to active duty in the Mediterranean. During his lifetime he was a public school educator, coached football & girls basketball at Americus, GA, high school, was freshman & varsity football coach at Georgia Tech, AD & Head football coach at USL, Lafayette, La., & ETSU, Johnson City. He was also Physical Ed Director for Sullivan County, Southeast Regional Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes & Vocational Guidance Counselor for Sullivan North & South High Schools, Kingsport, TN. Mr. Bell had served on the Johnson City School Board, the board of directors of Haven of Mercy, the local chapter of the National Football Foundation and had directed Shepherd’s Breakfast Munsey Memorial UMC. He was selected OVC Coach of the Year & NCAA District 4 National Coach of the Year in 1969 & inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and ETSU Athletic Hall of Fame and the NETN Sports Hall of Fame. At his request, his body is being donated to the Quillen College of Medicine at ETSU. A memorial service for Mr. Bell will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shepherd’s Breakfast at Munsey Memorial, Haven of Mercy, Johnson City, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Bristol, or BUCS Football & Friends Foundation. — A memorial service for John Robert Bell Sr., who died December 25, 2008, will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City.
