Jimmie was encouraged by professors to seek her PhD and was admitted to Columbia University Teachers’ College NY, NY for her doctoral studies. During this time in NY Jimmie saw early Broadway debuts and regularly attended ballet, film, and opera productions. She completed her Doctor of Education in 1959 and returned as professor of arts to U of L where she taught for 30 years.

Jimmie was a world-traveler and historian, carefully chronicling her experiences in over 52 countries in 40 years. Her travels often included tours of museums and local culture, including attending theater, music, and dance productions.

Jimmie was dedicated to local and national philanthropy, such as art education, Veterans’ causes, and medical research.

Family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette for the love and kindness shown to Jimmie during her stay. Finally, a special debt of gratitude goes out to Ashley Johnston, Jimmie’s beloved niece and caregiver, for her selfless devotion to Jimmie in her final days.

Jimmie will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and spirit of adventure. Her memory will live on through her colorful story-telling and dry wit. She inspired all who knew her to thirst for knowledge and live life to the fullest. She will be greatly missed by those who know and love her.
