STM’s Blue signs with Cajuns

LAFAYETTE – St. Thomas More Lady Cougars track and field standout Jamie Blue knew all along that she wanted to run for the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.

Not only because of her dad Stewart Blue, who is a member of the Ragin Cajuns “S’ Club for his efforts for the track team in 1965-1969 as a quarter-miler, but also because of former track and field coach Charles Lancon.

On Monday, Jamie officially got her opportunity to run for the Cajuns after she signed a national letter of intent to extend her track career at UL Lafayette.

“I always wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps,” Jamie said. I love track and I just want to run like my dad. I want to be as successful as he was.”

Along with walking in her father’s path, another reason Jamie wanted to run for the Ragin Cajuns was because of Lancon.

“Coach Lancon always said that I would be a good runner and that he hoped I would one day run for him,” Jamie said. I was excited when he told me that and I am really excited I will get the chance to do so.”

In four years with the Lady Cougars, Jamie helped lead them to three District 5-4A and two regional championships.

This past season, Jamie advanced to the region meet in four events the 400 (2nd), Long Jump (2nd), 4×400 relay and 4×200 relay.

But when Lancon died on April 13, 2002, Jamie didn’t believe that this would be an opportunity she would get.

“I really didn’t think I would get a chance to run at UL,” Jamie said. “I talked to my parents after he died and they told me not to give up. I was really sad and depressed.”

Although Lancon won’t be watching her physically, Jamie knows that he will be watching.

“I want to do the best that I can do for him,” Jamie said. “I know that he would be very proud of me right now. I know that every meet I run he will be watching.”
