Joseph Pershing Cashen, former SLI Football Letterman 1940-1941, like many Pershing Volunteered for military service. Pershing joined the US Navy. He was assigned to the USS Patterson (DD392) a Bagley Class Destroyer, par t of the 7th Fleet under command of Admiral Thomas Kinkaid. Pershing was involved in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Battle of the Philippines Sea, Invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was truly one of Americas Best Generation.

J. Pershing Cashen, Sr.

DELCAMBRE – A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for J. Pershing Cashen, Sr., age 93, at 11:00 am Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Fr. Ralph Landry will serve as celebrant for the services. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Lake Mausoleum with Military services conducted by the Vermilion parish Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 am on Saturday until service time.

A native of New Orleans and resident of Delcambre, Mr. Cashen passed away at 9:25 am on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Cashen was a Veteran of the US Navy and served his country honorably during WWII. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School in New Orleans, received his Bachelor Degree from SLI and his Master’s Degree in education for LSU. He dedicated his life to children and their education, he became a Coach at Delcambre High School, where he coached the first 6 man team, he then became Principal at Live Oak School in New Iberia and then returned to Delcambre High School to serve as Principal from 1961-1975.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Past Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Assoc. Upon his retirement he enjoyed camping with his friends in the Bon Temps Sam Camping Club and gardening. He was a very active man who always loved spending time with his family.

Mr. Cashen is survived by his son, Joseph Pershing Cashen, Jr. and wife Jacqueline; Mary Beth Broussard and husband Edward and Jill Muehr and husband Keith all of Lafayette; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and two sisters, Estelle Marquez and Delores Short both of New Orleans.

He is also survived by dear family friends Buddy and Lottie LeBlanc of Delcambre.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Chastant Cashen; Parents, William Francis and Helen Clague Cashen; two brothers, William Cashen and Roland Cashen and three sisters, Thelma Pender, Helen Leitz and Anna Margaret Cashen.

Pallbearers will be Steve Cashen, Adam Muehr, Jake Danos, Ben Williams, Jay Daniels and Ronald Driggs.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to Delcambre High School, which he loved and dedicated his career to,601 West Main Street, Delcambre, LA 70528

The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Lorraine Trahan, Dianne Harrison, Lynn Ozenne and Anitra Morris.
