Ian McGibboney, a.k.a. “Icon,” served as Track and Field manager from 1998 to 2005, under head coaches Charles Lancon and Lance Veazey.

In that time, Icon assisted with the cross-country and track teams, setting up practice and meets. He kept inventory of all team property and made supply runs as necessary. He was also responsible for ensuring athletic trainers fulfilled their duties to the team, a duty that took most of his time. Icon even provided personal support (and extremely amateur counseling) to athletes.

During road meets, he would videotape races; at home, he did everything from concessions to officiating, even serving as announcer for a practice meet. Icon describes the experience as, “blood, sweat, tears and fun.”

Ian graduated in 2002 with a BA in journalism and in 2005 with a master’s degree in English. He misses track and (rumor has it) track misses him.

As of 2007, Ian is living the untethered life in Springfield, Missouri, where he edits, writes headlines and updates the Web site of the Springfield News-Leader. He shares this duty, in part, with a sports editor from Sun Belt rival Western Kentucky. He still rides his bike or hits the track every day.
