Kris Wartelle, The Advertiser, March 20, 2018 Funeral services for James Hubert “Red” Dumesnil Sr., 86, will be held at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette. Dumesnil died on Sunday surrounded by his family. Entombment will be in St. John Cemetery Mausoleum in Lafayette. Dumesnil was born in Lafayette in 1931. He graduated from Cathedral High School and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he played on the tennis team. Athletic Network Footnote by Dr. Ed Dugas. Red was a member of the SLI Tennis Team, 1949-51, and a perfect gentleman on and off the tennis court. Dumesnil served in the United States Army in Tokyo from 1954-56 during the Korean Conflict. When he returned, he began a “temporary job” at Guaranty Bank, where he remained for over 40 years. His family said many companies and individuals credit their existence and success to “Uncle Red,” including Global Industries and Acadian Ambulance. “In the early days of Acadian, Red had a profound influence on both me personally and on our company,” Richard Zuschlag, CEO of Acadian Ambulance said. “Red was the first banker who was willing to take a risk on a fledgling ambulance company and his continued guidance over the years allowed us to grow into the company we are today. Every life Acadian saves is due, in part, to Red’s guidance and mentorship.” Dumesnil was an active member of the St. John the Evangelist Parish, serving on the finance committee for Jesuits. He was also a member of the Serra Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Former Lafayette Mayor Dud Lastrapes called Dumesnil a friend for close to 40 years. Lastrapes remembered his friend as someone with a great sense of humor. “He tore down a lot of fences, “ Lastrapes said. “He was easy to talk to and his sense of humor was very subtle. He was a friendly man and very outgoing.” “He knew how to deal with people and work with them. I think he (also) made himself available to help people wherever he could.†Dumesnil was not only a business leader, he was also active in the community, serving on numerous boards and committees including; the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana Association for Business and Industry, Louisiana Fiscal Reform Committee, the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority, the Beaver Club, Hospice of Acadiana, Women’s Hospital Foundation and the St. Thomas More Foundation. He was awarded the Lafayette Civic Cup in 1993. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Gertrude Hebert Dumesnil; his two sons, James Dumesnil Jr. and Emile Dumesnil, five daughters, Eileen Frugé, Catherine Hardy, Lucille Bourgeois, Gertrude Trahan and Yvonne Shelfer, as well as 16 grandchildren. Dumesnil’s family said he believed in giving back and helping others without much fanfare. “There is no end to the amount of good you can do, if you don’t care who gets the credit,” Dumesnil once said. Rosaries and the Divine Mercy had been offered throughout the day by Gertrude, children and grandchildren for his suffering and a peaceful death. At 12:15 AM he left this world to be with his Savior. Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Gertrude Hebert Dumesnil; his two sons, James Dumesnil, Jr. and his wife, Denise; Emile Dumesnil and his wife, Katherine Cecil; his five daughters, Eileen Frugé and her husband, Dan, Catherine Hardy and her husband, Bo, Lucille Bourgeois and her husband, Edward, Gertrude Trahan and Yvonne Shelfer and her husband, John Ashley; sixteen grandchildren, Jason, Holly and Anne-Marie Frugé; Spencer Dumesnil, Clement Cecil-Dumesnil and Emile Laurent Cecil-Dumesnil; Will Hardy; Katelyn, Kelsie and Alli Bourgeois; Blair, Alex, Sophie and Mia Trahan; and Bailey and Andrew Shelfer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Dumesnil of Lafayette, LA. Hubert was born in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1931. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1948. He then received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now University of Louisiana-Lafayette, where he played on the tennis team. From there, he earned a Master’s Degree in Economics from LSU and began work on his dissertation at Tulane before finally enlisting for the Korean Conflict serving in the United States Army in Tokyo from 1954-56. Upon his return, he married Gertrude Hebert of Jennings, LA in September 1957. He began a “temporary job” at Guaranty Bank, where he remained for over forty years. As the story goes, he only lasted as a bank teller for one week because he could not balance the till. Utilizing his economics degree and his love of people, he found a long career in banking. Many companies and individuals credit their existence and success to “Uncle Red”, including Global Industries and Acadian Ambulance to name a couple. “Local banks take care of the local community. Lafayette is a community that works hard and is productive.” Hubert was involved in his church community. He was an active member of the St. John the Evangelist Parish, serving on the Finance Committtee, served on the finance committee for Jesuits, a member and past president of the Serra Club, was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. He was very active in the community serving on boards and committees including the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana Association for Business and Industry, Louisiana Fiscal reform Committee, the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority, the Beaver Club, Hospice of Acadiana, Women’s Hospital Foundation and the St. Thomas More Foundation. Hubert was the first non-employee serving on the Board of Acadian Ambulance. He also helped reorganize and revitalize Junior Achievement and was awarded the Lafayette Civic Cup in 1993. He is noted and quoted for many sayings, not least of which is, “There is no end to the amount of good you can do, if you don’t care who gets the credit.” and “The most important thing in the world is to get along with your brothers and sisters.”. Pallbearers will be Jason Fruge’, Will Hardy, Bailey Shelfer, Andrew Shelfer, Dan Fruge, William “Bo” Hardy, Ed “Tiger” Bourgeois and John Ashley Shelfer. Honorary Pallbearers will be his tennis friends and the banking community. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille’s DOWNTOWN location on Monday, March 19, 2018 from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM and on Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evanglist from 8:00 AM until time of the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM.
