Basketball player,1957-61.

Married Ann Reed (SLI 1960) in 1960. Children – Bill, Diane, Sara are grown and living in Austin. Two grandchildren -Reed and Hayes

I was recruited to SLI in 1957 by Coach Shipley from Ashland, Kentucky along with Dale Griffith and Don Church (Dean’s brother), who both left school before graduation. Roommate at SLI was Tim Thompson from Lexington, Ky. We were part of Coach Shipley’s first group in Lafayette. Attended high school at Ashland, Kentucky High School, 1954-1957. Was a three year starter and made All-State honorable mention. Was a starter at USL for three years and had the single game scoring record (40 points) broken by Bo Lamar.

I have always felt that Coach Shipley and USL basketball and the education I received there were great stepping stones for life after college. I have also felt that the first Shipley group helped pave the way for better things to come for USL basketball. From old Long Gym on the campus to Blackham was a nice move for us. As I always tell eveyone,”My four years at USL and Lafayette were great for a country boy from the hills of Kentucky.”

Graduated with a BS in Business in 1961 and moved to Houston. Have worked as an investment broker for a New York Stock Exchange member firm since 1965. Lived in Houston for 29 years and moved to Austin in 1991. Currently with Hilltop Securities in Austin…I am a partner in The Darilek Investment Group at Hilltop Securities… Still work out several times a week and shoot hoops in the gym where I work out. Can still hit the basket, just can’t move real quickly.

Enjoyed my four years in Lafayette and being able to play for Coach Shipley for four years. Made a lot of good friends and still keep in contact with some of them.
