I heard the news and joined the exidous from the athletic dormitory. I was 18 years old and wanted to join the military on Monday, December 8th. My father who had been inducted into the army in 1918, asked me to wait until I had to register for the draft on April 7, my 19th birthday. He said they were short of labor in the rice I enlisted in the Army Air Forces 3 July 1942 and separated 12 Dec. 1945. Served in Pacific Theatre Dec, 1943 to Dec. to 20 Nov. 1945. Attained Rank of Technical Sgt., Airplane Technician. Citations: American Theatre Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal. Served in the Air Force Reserve 13 Dec. 1945 to 12 Dec. 1948. Luckily, I married Eileen Overbey on August 15,1948 and didn’t reenlist in the Air Force Reserve so I misssed the Korean Conflict. Not so for Ed Dressel, who was called back into the service. Incidentally, I would have mentioned him as a veteran, but he is deceased. We celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2008. Aileen was also a credit to SLI. She was awarded the Mable Lee Walton National Award for Ouststanding Soritory President; Red Jacket member, and elected to the Home Coming Court. Aquired her degree in three years, and married at 19.
