Home Phone: -- Obituary: Herbert Heymann, distinguished philanthropist, civic leader & veteran – April 10, 2001 Herbert Heymann Obituary Herbert Heymann, distinguished philanthropist and civic leader, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 in Lafayette following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Janis T. Heymann, his daughters, Claire Heymann of Dallas, Lila Heymann of New York City and Joan Heymann Bergmann of Houston, cousins, several nieces and nephews, Dr. Phillip Wolf of Denver and Joanne Wolf Cohen of Cincinnati, as well as cherished lifelong friends and devoted employees. Born in Lafayette on August 9, 1925, he was the son of legendary civic leader, Maurice Heymann and Germaine Rosenthal Heymann. Herbert graduated from Lafayette High School and SLI; attended Tulane University and the U.S. Naval Academy. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He is a Retired Lt. Commander and a recipient of three Commendation Awards. He was a pitcher for the United States Navy baseball team. He is a member of Temple Shalom. A lifetime contributor to countless major civic projects in Lafayette, the City of Lafayette and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have drawn upon his business skills. Herbert Heymann’s five decades of altruism, philanthropy and civic service have been recognized by numerous agencies and organizations. Among the organizations who benefited from his patronage and personal involvement were: President of the Lafayette Rotary Club, Chairman of the Easter Seal Society, Chairman of the American Red Cross and Chairman of the United Givers Fund, Founder and Chairman of the Youth Football Program for over 25 years, coached in the American Legion Baseball Program. His honors include the Distinguished Service Award of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, the National Recreation Association Award, youngest man to ever receive the annual City Civic Cup Award. Herbert was elected to the University Chapter of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Tecumseh Club Award of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. Herbert was named as the Outstanding Alumnus to the University and Alumni Association, received the Silver Beaver Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America, served as Chairman of the Building Committee for Cajun Field at the University and also served as Task Force Chairman representing the Chamber of Commerce toward the acquisition of the Cajundome. He served as honorary chairman of the American Cancer Society, served on the Board of Trustees of the UL Lafayette Foundation and was the sole lifetime sponsoring member of the Louisiana Classics sponsors for UL Lafayette. Herbert received the Volunteer Activist Award and received special recognition from the Catholic Bishops Charity Ball. He was the recipient of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Acadiana Award and received the Roll On Award for recognition of his outstanding contribution of interest and service toward UL Lafayette Athletics as well as the Theodore G. Schad, Jr. Business Achievement Award. Herbert was instrumental in the creation of the Municipal Auditorium and the Planetarium and both were built on land donated by the Heymann Family. He recently donated the Heymann Building downtown to the Natural History Museum. He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Germaine Heymann and his sister, Jacqueline Cohn. Pallbearers will be Bob Rodgers, Dr. Patrick Bergmann, Blake Heymann, Chris Verrett, Dr. Denbo Montgomery, Thad Montgomery, Dr. Phillip Wolf, and Dr. Sweeney Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Bernard, Herbert Abdalla, Dr. Edgar Breaux, Ronald Heymann, Dr. Douglas Chesson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heymann Foundation, P. O.
