Obituary:

H.V. “Choo Choo” Fondren Jr.

H.V. “Choo Choo” Fondren Jr., a retired Morgan City businessman, passed away on Oct. 20, 2011. Mr. Fondren, a descendent of early Morgan City settlers, was born in Patterson but spent his first 10 years in Groves, Texas.

He graduated from both Morgan City High School and the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now ULL), where he lettered four years in football.

After college, Choo Choo and his new bride Carolyn re-turned to Morgan City, where he worked with his father for the next 27 years at Blackie Fondren Concrete.
He was involved in many civic activities and held two elected positions — as a member of the St. Mary Parish School Board for 14 years, and then for two terms as a councilman-at-large in the newly formed St. Mary Parish Council.

Mr. Fondren is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Forcheimer Fondren; his daughter, Holly Fondren of Houston; his sons, Clay Fondren of New Orleans, and Fredrick Fondren and his wife Katherine of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and his grandchildren, James Baxter Fondren of New Orleans, and Sutton and Reigne Fondren of Broken Arrow, Okla.

Mr. Fondren was preceded in death by his parents, H.V. “Blackie” Fondren Sr. and Amy Bourgeois Fondren.

He will be missed by his family and friends, who will remember his jovial personality and sincere loyalty.

The Fondren family wishes to thank Dr. James Ellis and the attending nursing staff at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for their heartfelt care.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to your favorite charity in Mr. Fondren’s name.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Private entombment will take place following Mass.
