She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Joseph Weaver of Houma; and her grandparents, George and Margaret Peak, and Joseph and Alice Weaver of Texas.

“Sandy” was a 1948 graduate of Terrebonne High. She received her B.S. from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, where she was a Red Jacket, Cheerleader, assistant editor of the Vermillion, SLI Beauty, and a member of Delta Sigma Delta. She then taught physical education at Assumption High where she coached and sponsored the Jacket Club. After her marriage to Thomas J. During her stay at Monmouth in the ’70’s she was an Assistant Professor of Physical Education. She coached the Fencing team and acted as Men’s Intramural Director in addition to her classes. During this time, she earned her P.h.D. at LSU. Dr. Smith returned to Houma in the ’80s and taught Kindergarten, retiring after 20 years at East Houma Elementary School.
