Home Phone: -- To view the posting of his obituary in Archived News – * * * * Obituary: Guy Louie Harvey – Football 1963-66, Faculty 1967-69 – Feb. 18, 2019 January 16, 1944 – February 18, 2019 Guy Louie Harvey, 75, died Monday, February 18, 2019, at 10:15 AM. Born January 16, 1944, he was a native of Raceland and resident of Thibodaux, LA. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Ordoyne Funeral Home and will continue on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 9:00 AM until service time at Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 AM at the church. Burial will follow at Saint Charles Borromeo Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cynthia Boudreaux Harvey; daughters, Kay H. (Charlie) Melancon, Beth H. (Emile) Geneux; grandchildren, Noah Melancon, Grace Melancon, Ella Melancon, Henry Melancon, Evelyn Geneux, Emmy Geneux, Georgia Geneux, Annabeth Geneux; brother, Donald (Elsie) Harvey. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lavell and Reata Harvey; sister, Brenda Madeira. He played college football at USL, where he received his Master’s degree in Education. He remained in contact with his teammates and friends throughout the years. He impacted numerous lives during his time at Thibodaux High School as a coach, teacher and principal until his retirement in 2002, a career spanning 33 years. After retirement, he remained actively involved in Thibodaux High Schools Student Council as well as the Louisiana Association of Student Councils, routinely attending local, state, regional and national conventions. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, and spending quality time with his grandchildren, and in recent years, became very involved with his family’s genealogy. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations may be to the Guy Harvey Memorial Fund at Hancock Whitney Bank for future allocation to scholarship and leadership endeavors. Guy was a good friend since August, 1967 when we shared an office as new HPE faculty members. My family shared his love for home-made ice cream – usually with me turning the freezer and Guy riding my small children on his back on our patio. My memories of Guy are all positive and he was one of those “steady” people. I have never known a finer person and his Thibodaux High School students know what a wonderful leader they had with him as their principal. Below his LM is biographical information about his career as an educator. Russ Faulkinberry’s Living Memorial, Guy Harvey – Football 1963-66 I have many memories of Coach Russ Faulkinberry, but my most vivid memory came not while I played at USL, but over forty years later (August 13, 2005) at a football reunion for coach. I was in the reception line to shake hands with my former coach and was wondering if he would even remember me. When I finally arrived to shake his hand, he took one look at me and said, “Guy Harvey, Merlin Walet“. This instantly brought back so many memories of a 1965 game against McNeese for the Gulf Coast Conference championship. It was a very close game. We knew that it would take a total team effort to win. McNeese had a spectacular running back named Walet who was the team leader in running and scoring touchdowns. On one of the plays I came across the line and tackled Walet. The collision caused him to go down and stay down. I was able to recover and get to my feet. I remember the trainers helping Walet to the sideline. We went on to win the game by a score of 14-7. The fact that Coach Faulkinberry remembered that play from forty plus years ago was amazing and attests to his ability as a coach. Of all the thousands of plays he called and watched as a coach, he remembered the play that was the highlight of my college career. I went on to win the defensive lineman of the year, but that award was minor compared to the feeling I had the night Coach Faulkinberry remembered that Saturday night many years ago. * * * * * Guy served as a graduate assistant in Health and Physical Education at USL in the Spring 1967. After earning his master’s degree, he accepted a position in the HPE Department as an instructor for the 1967-68 and the 1968-69 years. He served as a teacher and coach at DeLaSalle High School for the next two years, then accepted a teaching/coaching position at Thibodaux High School in 1971. He remained at Thibodaux High School for the next 30 1/2 years – until his retirement on Jan. 31, 2002. Updated on Nov. 17, 2017 by phone with Ed Dugas.
