Frank “Coach” L. Ferachi
(Died January 6, 2012)

He was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law and friend to all who knew him. He was a true life people person who always shared his knowledge and wisdom with those who sought him. He was a retired principal in the Iberville Parish School system then continued to teach at Westside Vocational School as the competency program coordinator. His teaching, coaching and administrative career spanned more than 50 years. A resident and native of Plaquemine, he passed away peacefully at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, surrounded by his family at his home. He was 84. He served in the division of the U.S. Army as 2nd lieutenant in the Korean War, 45th and 180th Infantry Division. He served from 1950 to 1953 and he received special honors for his military service from Maj. Gen. Wible, who was the commanding general, Far East Command. He also received a combat infantry badge, Bronze Star Medal, United Nations Medal and the Korean War Service Medal from the president of Korea. Visiting at Wilbert Funeral Home, Plaquemine, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a rosary said at 7 p.m. Visitation at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaquemine, on Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 8 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Cleo J. Milano, celebrant. Entombment in Grace Memorial Park Mausoleum. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Catherine Willis Ferachi; a daughter, Laurie Ourso and husband Rodney, of Brusly; a son, Luke Ferachi and wife Kristine Brossett, of Baton Rouge; a grandchild, Shea Michael “Budee” Ourso; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Bueche and husband Nolan and Beula Ferachi; a brother-in-law, Randolph Willis and wife Catherine; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Della Leggio Ferachi; two brothers, Peter “Bob” Ferachi and Vincent A. Ferachi; and dearest cousin, Charles Edward “Chub” Ferachi. Pallbearers will be Luke Ferachi, Shea Ourso, Brian Willis, Eric Willis, Earl A. “Bubba” Willis, Nolan Bueche, Robert Willis and Lawrence Shaw. Honorary pallbearers are C.J.Alexander, Donald Albarado, Carlyle Marix, Randolph Willis, Nolan Bueche Jr., Vincent Leggio, Gloria “Pim” Clebert and all of the students and players that he lovingly coached and taught. He graduated from Plaquemine High School and attended and completed the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1950. He received his masters plus 30 from LSU in education in 1960 and also completed the PIPS program. He was a member of the American Legion Post 167 where he also served as the commissioner of baseball, Iberville Parish Principals Association, Iberville Association of Educators, Louisiana Association of School Executives, the executive board of the Louisiana Association of Principals, Southern Association of College and Schools, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Association of Middle Schools, National Education Association and Louisiana Real Estate Commission. He was a lifetime member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. He was recreation director for the City of Plaquemine from 1960 to 1985. He was a member of the International Order of Alhambra, the executive boards of the Greater Baton Rouge Port Commission appointed by Gov David Treen. He was a reserved commissioned officer for the U.S. Army Adjutant General Corp. He was a true diehard Plaquemine High School Green Devil supporter and a supporter of his grandson Shea Ourso’s baseball career. Special thanks to the staff of Home Instead and their caregivers, Colleen and Chiquita, and the staff of Comfort Care Hospice, Kellie, Deborah and John and Michael Barbee. Also a heartfelt special thanks to Denny “Den Den” Bujol and the family and friends for their support through his illness.
