Home Phone: -- Updated June 8, 2020 Florent Hardy, Jr., Ph.D. joined the Louisiana State Archives, a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, as Dr. Hardy taught at Breaux Bridge Elementary, Junior High and High Schools as well as at the university level. He is a former employee of the State Department of Education (DOE) and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. While at the DOE, Dr. Hardy was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from both the Louisiana Vocational Association and the American Vocational Association. He was selected to study the French education system by the French Department of Education in 1981. His creation, the DOE’s vocational education newsletter, The VOICE, was recognized nationally. Dr. Hardy was 1987 President of the LSU Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, that year’s winner of the Regional Outstanding Chapter Award. Dr. Hardy has been a career-long member of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) and the Society of Southwest Archivists. He is a charter member of the St. Martin Parish Chapter of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) and is a former CODOFIL board member. He has also served as a board member of LSU’s College of Education Peabody Society, Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He currently serves as a Board member of the Sons of the American Revolution/General Philemon Thomas Chapter, the Baton Rouge Excalibur Club and LSU’s Friends of French Studies. He is a founding member of his Great Uncle’s Auguste “Nonco†Pelafigue Foundation and served as the first lecturer of the Foundation’s Lecture Series. As State Archivist, he served as the coordinator of the eleven- member, Governor-appointed Louisiana Historical Records Advisory Board and as ex-officio coordinator of the FRIENDS of the Louisiana State Archives Board as well as creator, editor and publisher of the fourteen FRIENDS Newsletters (2010-2016). Dr. Hardy has served on the following Museum Boards under the auspices of the Secretary of State: Caddo-Pine Island Oil Museum; E. D. White Historic Site; Louisiana State Cotton Museum; Old State Capitol Advisory Board; Shreveport Water Works Museum; and The Louisiana Military Hall of Fame Museum, as well as the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial, Louisiana Governor’s Mansion and the West Florida Republic Bicentennial Commissions. In his efforts to support the State Archives Save Our History campaign which he began, Dr. Hardy has published in state, national and international publications. He has spoken to archival, genealogical, historical and civic groups both in and out-of-state; among them, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, Chambers of Commerce, Book Clubs, Retirement Homes, and Civic Organizations. As State Archivist Dr. Hardy coordinated Archives Month Activities which included speakers and topics from all areas of the community seeking to make State Archives relevant to the public. Additionally, Dr. Hardy visited other state archives to learn from them and to apply successful archival techniques. He visited, relying solely on personal time and finances, Colorado, Massachusetts, Montana, National Archives (DC), North Carolina, Rhode Island and Texas. He also visited Mississippi State Archives on state time and in a state vehicle. Dr. Hardy authored A Brief History of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, 1900-1960 (Baton Rouge, Claitor’s Publishing Division, 1973; reprinted in 2012 and 2019). Other noted publications appear in the Quebec Archives Quarterly, the LSU KAPPAN Contact, the Louisiana Education Research Journal, and The Boardman. Dr. Hardy was selected to submit the center-piece article “Trademarks of a Vitally Functioning State Archives†in the Society of American Archivists 2014 bimonthly magazine, Archival Outlook. He has been featured on C-SPAN, WBRZ’s Sunday Morning Journal, and several radio programs. Under Dr. Hardy’s direction, the Louisiana State Archives, Louisiana’s Primary Governmental Records Repository, received the Education Award in 2011 presented by the Louisiana Trust for HISTORIC PRESERVATION for its exhibits, “A Long, Long Time Ago†which recognized the many contributions of the Long family, and the “West Florida Republic†which involved the participation of the eight parishes which were part of the seventy-four-day Republic. Also under Dr. Hardy’s leadership, the Louisiana State Archives, which he fondly refers to as Louisiana’s Historical Jewelry Box, was voted one of the hidden gems of the state’s art community by Southern Living Magazine, and was listed as one of the 101 Best Web Sites for Genealogy by the Family Tree Magazine. The Louisiana State Archives served as a partner in the Multi-State Preservation Consortium which offers a centralized, cost-effective interstate regional repository for state and local digital information, and has been featured in the National Geographic Society’s United States Gulf Coast States Geotourism MapGuide. Dr. Hardy was named one of USL’s College of Education’s Outstanding Alumnus, Class of 1972, and was honored to be featured in the Fall 2013 Alumni Association Section of La LOUISIANE, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Alumni Magazine. Dr. Hardy was selected as the Louisiana Association of Museums’ 2014 PUBLIC OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR as the individual who has demonstrated special or sustained, significant support of Louisiana’s museums and historic sites.
