Ernest Lancon 1961 – 1965 Married to the former Terri Mouton for 35 years. In 1961, I was recruited by Coach Shipley, after having played four years of high school basketball for New Iberia High School. In high school, I was twice named to the All District team and was named Outstanding Basketball Player in the state in 1961. I attended the summer basketball practices that first summer and got a pretty good idea of what the next four years would bring!! In the Fall of 1961, we moved into the dorm, attended Coach Shipley’s orientation meeting, and my roommate (whose name I can’t even remember!) didn’t even unpack his bags!! Over the next four years, thanks to Coach Shipley, I learned that success comes only with self-discipline and the drive to go after what you want! Being named to the All-Conference Team in 1964 and playing in the NAIA National Tournament in 1965 are the highlights of my playing career at USL. When I finished at USL, I started a career in the field of education that lasted 26 years. My first coaching / teaching job was at Our Lady of Fatima in Lafayette where I coached two District Championship teams. In 1969, I was offered the Head Basketball position at my high school alma mater, New Iberia Senior High. Within the 9 years of coaching there, NISH won 5 District Championships. The defensive and offensive plays which I learned and used under Coach Shipley were the key elements in my own coaching strategies. I owe much of my success as a coach to Coach Shipley. In 1978, I moved into the Administrative Office at NISH as Assistant Principal; and became Principal in 1986. Proudly, the Administration and Faculty of NISH accepted the award of National School of Excellence from the United States Department of Education in 1989. My tenure in education afforded me many opportunities to stay in touch with athletics, even after my coaching days were over. I had the privilege of serving on the Louisiana High School Athletic Executive Committee for 3 years, as well as serving on the Executive Committees of the Lafayette Area Basketball and Football Associations. In 1995, I retired from education and secured employment with the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office — serving as Juvenile Officer for Iberia, St. Mary, and St. Martin Parishes — a position I still hold. We anxiously await the arrival of our first grandchild in December, 2003.
