Former coach, educator dies Sunday at 82

Obituary for Elvin Brand

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at a 1 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for Elvin “Coach” Brand, 82, a well-known athlete and educator. He died Sunday at 6:30 a.m. in Oakwood Village Nurse Care Center.

Burial will be in St. John-Fatima Cemetery. The Rev. Richard R. Greene, pastor, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, will be the celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the services.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Manouvrier Brand of Lafayette; one sister, Mrs. L. Glenn Wilson of Opelousas; two nephews, one great niece, and one great nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Mrs. Welton Mouton Sr.

A native on New Iberia and resident of Lafayette for 68 years, Mr. Brand was the son of the late Edward Brand, a native of Illinois, and the former Josephine O’Shea, a native of Galveston, Texas.

He was a graduate of SLI (now USL), where he earned a bachelor’s degree and LSU, where he earned a master’s degree. He also attended Colorado State in Greely and Northwestern in Illinois.

Brand graduated from Lafayette High and later returned there as basketball coach and assistant football coach. He lettered in basketball, track, and football at SLI. As a senior at SLI , he was captain of the football team and a member of the SIAA championship basketball team in 1930.

He also coached at Eunice High School before he returned to SLI as a member of the health and physical education faculty in 1939.

He taught at SLI/USL until his retirement in 1973, serving as acting head of the physical education department from 1950-1958.

During World War II, he was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Corps , serving for four years.

Brand was also active in the American Legion baseball program. As sponsor of the PE Majors Club at USL, he stage of successful series of boxing tournaments in Blackham Coliseum during the 1950s.

For many years he headed the Southwestern Louisiana Football Officials Association. He was also active in Boy Scout work.

A rosary will be recited Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the funeral home.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday and from 8:00 a.m. until time of services Tuesday.

OBITUARY
Mrs. Elvin Brand

LAFAYETTE – Mrs. Elvin Brand, the former Genevieve Manouvrier, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at her residence. She was 93 years of age.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Elvin Brand; her parents, A.J. and Inez Morales Manouvrier, Sr.; two brothers, A.J. Manouvrier, Jr., and Paul J. Manouvrier, all of Opelousas; her sister, Mary M. Parker, of New Orleans; and two nephews, J. Michael Mouton and Welton P. Mouton, Jr., both of Lafayette.

Surviving are a nephew, Paul J. Manouvrier, of New Orleans; a great nephew, Jeffery M. Mouton and wife, Wendy; a great niece Rebecca M. Coody and husband, Greg; and a great-great niece, Elise C. Mouton, all of Lafayette.

Mrs. Brand wished to thank the Tim Maragos family for their long sustaining friendship, the staff of Corner Stone Village South, and Hospice of Acadiana.

There will be no funeral service as her body has been donated for the purpose of medical research.
