Elsie Cancienne Behrhorst

LAFAYETTE – Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, for Elsie Cancienne Behrhorst, 88, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 27, 2011 in Lafayette.

Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Reverend Chester Arceneaux, Rector of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.

Survivors include her two daughters, Johanna Darnell and her husband Charles of Ponchatoula, LA and Francesca Bensabat of Darrow, LA; one son, Konrad Behrhorst and his wife Lisa of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Nicholas Bensabat, Laura Bensabat, Matthew Bensabat, Philip Behrhorst and Jacob Behrhorst; one brother, Philip Cancienne, Jr. and his wife Vivian of Youngsville; and her cat “Jack Jack”.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernon E. Behrhorst; parents, Philip and Annette Kerne Cancienne; and two sisters, Alma C. Bourgeois and Odette C. Naquin.

A native of Lockport and a resident of Lafayette for 70 years, Elsie Behrhorst was a very active member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, volunteering in the gift shop and for many other church related activities. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Serra Club, St. John’s Ladies Altar Society, volunteered at St. Joseph’s Diner and in 2000, Mrs. Behrhorst received the Bishop’s Medal. She was a physical education teacher at SLI (now ULL) and with Lafayette Parish School System for over 35 years. Elsie Behrhorst will be dearly missed by her family, friends and all who knew and loved her.

Pallbearers will be family.

The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille’s DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 from 7:30 AM until time of service.
