Elizabeth Roy “Beth” Martin
LAFAYETTE – Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at the Cathedral St. John the Evangelist , for Elizabeth Roy “Beth” Martin, 54, who passed away Saturday, April 7, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was a native of Opelousas and resident of Lafayette for 28 years.

Entombment will follow in the St. Therese of Lisieux Alcove of the Garden Mausoleum in the St. John Cemetery.

Reverend Cedrick Sonnier, St. Thomas More Church of Eunice, will be the Celebrant of the funeral mass and will conduct the funeral services. Concelebrating will be Reverend Keith J. DeRouen, Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Reverend Tim Richard, Pastor of St. Edmond Catholic Church and Deacon Nelson Schexnayder, St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church.

Beth is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, Allen Martin; her daughter, Jennifer Marine and her husband, Ryan, of Lafayette, LA; and her sons, Michael Martin and his wife, Laurie, of McKinney, TX, and William Martin and his wife, Meghann, of Spring, TX. She is also survived by her parents Martin, Jr. and Miriam Roy of Opelousas, LA; her sisters, Deborah Fay and her husband, Louis, and Janice Mayer and her husband, Chris; and her brothers, Martin Roy, III, and his wife, Sandra, Robert Roy and his wife, Stephanie, and Charles Roy, all of Opelousas, LA.

Her grandchildren, Alayna and Gabrielle Martin of McKinney, TX, were among her greatest joys and will miss her loving and gentle guidance. Her passion for living was found in simple things like baking cookies, planting flowers, sewing and smocking dresses, and teaching others to enjoy the same. Her devotion to her family was unquestionable. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend, always there giving of herself and thinking of others first. As such, Beth will be remembered for her grace, kind heart and giving nature. She was never without a smile.

Beth was a graduate of AIC High School in Opelousas. She graduated from USL and was an avid supporter of UL athletics. She and Al were loyal fans, attending most games and events together come rain or shine. Her enthusiasm for athletics was evident as she not only attended all of her children’s games, but also coached her daughter’s SLYSI softball team for a season which ended in a trip to the USSA World Tournament.

Beth also touched many lives during her eighteen years as a Pre-K teacher at Cathedral Carmel School. Lovingly known as “Miss Beth,” she instilled in her young students an appreciation for all God’s creatures great and small. Students responded to her with the very respect she always showed and gave them. The love and care for the children she taught became her special gift to their parents. Her colleagues at Cathedral Carmel held a special place in her heart as did her many friends at de la Salle.

Beth was an active member of multiple breast cancer support groups and was a proud member of the “Bosom Buddies.” In fact, one of her proudest moments was the exceeding of the goal for participation of the team established in her honor in this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She will be sorely missed by her Bosom Buddies.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Gene Brierre and his assistant, Eric Buller, Dr. Jody Rosson, Dr. Julian Krawczyk, and Cyd Begnaud, and their staffs. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to each caregiver in Our Lady of Lourdes Oncology Unit. Last, but not least, Al and his family are forever grateful to the many friends and family members who were there to help care for Beth.

Visitation hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m., and from 8:00 a.m. to service time on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Mickey Martin, Billy Martin, Ryan Marine, Marty Roy, Robert Roy, Charlie Roy, Jude Martin, and Jerry Trouille.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beth Martin Memorial Fund at Cathedral Carmel School.
