After graduating from Chalmette High School in 1969, I elected to attend USL and walk-on the football team. I played offensive guard and linebacker at Chalmette and made All District, All City and All State(2nd team). Several Chalmette alumni played at USL including Roy Pendergast and Gerald Dugas plus my future wife attended as well.

Players who I especially remember include Dicky Haik, Charlie Fox, David Meche and Roland Degeyter.

At 5’9 1/2” and 170 lbs, I was not going to play guard or linebacker at this level. However I loved the game and wanted to be part of the team.

Summer camp was hot, tough and difficult. As a walk-on I primarily acted as practice team member, held blocking dummies and did whatever Coach asked of me.

I have fond memories of Irwin Sibille who was tough on the outside, but genuinely cared for his players.

After coming off a 1968 GSC championship, expectations were high. Unfortunately the 1969 season ended 5-5 and it was a tumultuous season. After one particular defeat, the team (not including walk-ons) was put through a brutal Monday practice referred to as Black Monday. I recall that a few scholarship athletes quit the team after Black Monday.

Spring training in 1970 was a chance at a new season and an new opportunity. One particular memory I have is of Coach Faulkinberry working with the lineman in a drill called the bullpen. One player would stand in a circle surrounded by players and Coach would call out a player’s who would rush and attack the player in the circle. Then Coach called another name and another name and another name until the player in the circle was exhausted(and usually bleeding a bit).

At the end of spring training Coach Sibille took me aside and told me that it was time to “retire”. Since I was the perfect combination of small and slow, I agreed and my college football “career “ was over. I had no regrets and enjoyed the camaraderie and experience.

I went on to graduate from USL with a History degree in 1973 and went on to graduate from LSU Law school in 1976. I served in the USAF Judge Advocate General Department from 1976-81. I have practiced law in Lafayette since 1981 and maintain a criminal defense law practice today.

I attribute much of my “success” to the values I learned from football and especially my time as a walk-on at USL in the summer of 1969.

While attending LSU Law School I was an AFROTC Cadet and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 1975. Upon graduation I was promoted to Captain and entered active duty in October 1976 as a Judge Advocate. I served at Cannon AFB in Clovis NM and served a 3-year tour at Bitburg AB Germany. I was honorably discharged in November 1981.
