James E. “Red” Cloud

OPELOUSAS – Funeral services for James E. “Red” Cloud will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Lafond Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel with burial at St. John’s cemetery in Lewisburg. The Rev. Deacon Tom Lindsey will conduct the services.

Mr. Cloud, 82, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at his residence. He was a beloved husband, father and step-father. “Red” was born Sept. 1, 1923, in Bayou, Texas. He graduated from Steven F. Austin High School in 1941 and attended Southern Methodist University on a football scholarship in Dallas, Texas. He was in the U.S. Marines during World War II was called back to the Korean Conflict. While attending SLI, he was a member of football championship team in 1943. He pursued a career in Insurance in Texas and Louisiana. After his retirement he moved to Louisiana and enjoyed golf and its affiliations, He was employed part-time at Red Oaks Golf course and Indian Hills Country Club and was also associated with the Opelousas Community Choir.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Mell Christ Cloud, of Opelousas; his daughter, Lisa Cloud, of King, N.C.; step-daughters, Becky Gossett and her husband, Jim, of Houston, Texas, Judy LeBlanc and her husband, Jerry, of Baton Rouge, Jeane Ducharme, of Opelousas and Bonnie Champagne and her husband, Keith, of Youngsville La.; step-sons, Gerald “Bubba” Ducharme and his wife, Monette, of Opelousas, Chris Ducharme and his wife, Karen, of Salina, Kansas, and Quin Ducharme, of Lafayette La.; nieces, Linda Turek, of Angleton, Texas, Lauranne Murray, of Rosenberg Texas and Lynette Turek, of Angleton, Texas. ‘Red’ is also survived by 13 step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse James and Jessie Lee Cloud, and a sister, Elizabeth Turek.

Visitation will be observed from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. today, July 7, and will continue from 8 a.m. Saturday, July 8, until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today.
