We had an offense that scored a lot of points. I led the state in passing for two years.” Prudhomme was Lafayette High’s third All-State quarterback in the decade of the 1970s, following Rex Henderson and Robbie Mahfouz. In 1978, though, Prudhomme and the Lions responded with a 12-1 campaign, not losing until a freezing cold, rainy night at Cajun Field to St. Augustine in the state semifinals. “It was a nasty night,” Prudhomme said. “We were just out of our element in those horrible conditions.” After finishing at LHS and then playing for the then-USL Ragin’ Cajuns from 1979-1982, Prudhomme began working for Magnolia Liquor Co. in Baton Rouge and stayed there for 13 years, before moving to New Orleans for six years. Then shortly before Hurricane Lili hit in 2002, Prudhomme returned to Lafayette to be the executive vice-president of the company, now known as Republic National Distributing. It’s the second largest of its kind in the nation, serving 18 states and the District of Columbia. Prudhomme and his wife, Judy, are approaching their 10th anniversary and have a 7-year-old daughter, Ava. “It’s been very nice to be back in Lafayette,” Prudhomme said. “We had a cookout a couple of weeks ago with some of the guys and coach (Bob) Mahfouz (now in Alexandria) showed up. It was great to see him.” Prudhomme said his job and family take up most of his time, but he does watch his old high school wide receiver Mark Barousse coach the Lions on occasion, and also enjoyed watching the UL career of Jerry Babb and the NFL career of Jake Delhomme. “I used to critique quarterbacks when I was younger, but not anymore,” he said. “People in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks. It’s a tough job. Jake got my jersey number (No. 12) retired at UL. I thank him for that when I see him. When people ask me what number I wore in college, I tell them it got retired.” Daily Advertiser, August 29, 2007 (currently) Vice President – UL Alumni Association (former) President UL Lettermen Club Lafayette Chamber of Commerce “Leadership Lafayette” Class XX State Board Member – Louisiana Restaurant Association
