Mr. Dwayne Searle

Home Phone: 337-234-1769 Served as UL Women’s Head Basketball Coach, 1990-96. Basketball: Searle replaces Beene May 27, 2005 – mkrieg@theadvertiser.com SCOTT – There were just too many enticing opportunities at Acadiana High for Dwayne Searle to pass up. There was the opportunity to be closer to his family. There was the chance to compete at the highest level and even possibly an opportunity to coach his sons one day. All of that was enough to sell Searle on the vacant boys basketball coach position at AHS. It didn’t take Searle long to sell himself to principal Janet Hiatt. Hiatt announced Thursday the school has hired Searle as the new Wreckin’ Rams boys coach, replacing the retired (from coaching) Bobby Beene. “When I talked to him, you could just tell that he had done his homework,” Hiatt said. “He was so familiar with the program and the school. Some of the other coaches hadn’t done their homework. So when I did my homework, it just was obvious to me that Dwayne was the right choice.” Searle’s resume already includes head coaching positions at three different institutions. He was the girls’ coach at North Vermilion prior to accepting the AHS job. Searle also was the boys coach at Lafayette High (1996-01) and the women’s coach at UL (1990-96). His latest post brings him closer to his Lafayette home. “It was just a situation close to my home,” Searle said. “My sons are going to be going there and it’s a chance to get into a real good league, with good teams. I felt like I wanted to do that. “I felt like it was a situation where there were too many opportunities to pass up. I may not ever get this opportunity again. It was the right time, the right place.” Searle said it was difficult to leave North Vermilion, but couldn’t pass up the chance to spend more time with his family. He isn’t sure if his kids will play basketball at Acadiana, but he’ll still get to be with them on a daily basis. “I’m not sure, they may or may not play,” he said. “If I get the chance to coach them, it would be great. But, just being around them will be nice. I’ll have more time to be close with my family.” Searle replaces Beene, who coached the Wreckin’ Rams to the 3-5A district championship (14-0). “He has big shoes to fill,” Hiatt said. “He (Bobby Beene) had such a great career here and they were 14-0 in district last year. But, Dwayne knows what he’s walking into.” Searle doesn’t expect a difficult transition switching back to coaching boys. He’s also not worried about expectations following in Beene’s footsteps. “I think the most pressure is put on yourself to do well and to do well for the kids,” Searle said. “Bobby established tradition and a nice program. Hopefully we’ll continue that. They have quality athletes to be successful.” Originally published May 27, 2005
