Home Phone: -- Football: Transfer Jones to leave Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, October 1, 2012 Delvin Jones, a highly touted transfer who started his college career playing two games in 2010 for Ole Miss, has left the UL football team for personal reasons and will not return, head coach Mark Hudspeth said Sunday night. “It has nothing to do with discipline or suspension. It’s completely on his terms,” Hudspeth said Sunday night. “He’s having some family issues, and just felt it’s best he’d leave. “We wish him all the best in the future.” Jones started the season as UL’s backup Bandit outside linebacker behind Dominque Tovell, but was moved to defensive end in the off week following a Sept. 15 loss at Oklahoma State. He didn’t play in a Sept. 8 win at Troy due to a toe injury, then had five tackles, including three solo stops, in the game against OSU. But Jones left the team last week to return to his home in South Florida and wasn’t on the sideline for Saturday’s win over Florida International, leaving him with seven total tackles over two games in his brief Cajun career. “He just said he has a lot of personal issues going on with his family and had to decide on something for his future,” Hudspeth said, “and right now football is not in his best interest.” Prior to the season, UL defensive coordinator Greg Stewart called Jones “one heck of a football player.” But Hudspeth said Sunday the departure “doesn’t affect us at all,” mostly because Jones was playing so sparingly. “We did have expectations,” the Cajun coach said, “but I guess he just didn’t stay long enough to realize those.” But, Hudspeth added, “I’m not saying he couldn’t (do that). He’s very talented, and eventually could have helped out.”
