September 7, 1932 – November 19, 2013

Memorial service for David G. Moore is scheduled for 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 23, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Lake Charles. Dr. J.P. Miles, retired director of Carey Baptist Association, and Dr. Ray Shawa, principal of Hamilton Christian Academy in Lake Charles, will conduct the service. Music will be led by Cary Pardue. The burial and graveside service will take place at Highland Memorial Gardens on Gulf Highway at 10:00 Saturday morning. Mr. Moore was born in Louisville, MS on September 7, 1932. He grew up in Jonesboro, LA, attending and graduating from Jonesboro Hodge High School in 1950. He received his B.S. degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now USL) in Lafayette, LA in 1955. In 1962 Mr. Moore was awarded his Masters Degree in Education from Louisiana State University. He entered the coaching program after his graduation from USL. His first coaching assignment was at Southwest Mississippi Junior College in Summit, MS. He coached football and baseball for one year prior to entering the US Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. He served in Okinawa and Korea during his tour of duty.
Following his release from the Air Force, Mr. Moore began teaching and coaching at Opelousas High School. In 1963 he married Harlan Cannon, also a graduate of USL. In 1969 Mr. Moore was appointed head football coach and athletic director at Opelousas High.
In 1972 he accepted a graduate coaching position with McNeese State University, working towards a doctorate of Education degree, which he received in 1978. Following his year as graduate assistant at McNeese, Coach Moore accepted the position of head football coach at Lake Charles High School, where he coached for six years. Lake Charles High was very competitive and successful, winning about 75 percent of games. During that time, Coach Moore served as President of the Louisiana Coaches Association. He was also an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) for 25 years, enjoying the opportunity to meet and interact with one of his heroes, Tom Landry as well as former LSU coach Jerry Stovall. On a local level, FCA had a significant impact on Calcasieu Parish students during this time.
In 1985 Mr. Moore retired from the Louisiana School System and began teaching at Little Cypress Mauriceville High School in Orange, TX. After four years there, Mr. Moore was named principal at the newly organized Hamilton Christian Academy in Lake Charles, LA. Dr. Moore worked at HCA for 13 years. The school started with a faculty of 14 members and a student enrollment of 195. At the time of his retirement, the faculty and staff consisted of 42 members and the student population was approximately 425.
After retiring in 2002, following 47 years of service in the educational field, Dr. Moore devoted much of his time at First Baptist Church of Lake Charles and to his only grandson at the time â€“ Matthew David Moore. Sometimes it seemed that he could not get enough of Matthew! Related to First Baptist Church, he was an active deacon for 40 years. He also served as a Sunday school leader, the Coordinator of senior adult activities, the Coordinator of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry, and teacher of the senior adult auditorium class.
Mr. Moore enjoyed working in his yard, swimming, tennis and walking. He was a devoted fan of the LSU Tigers. In his latter days, he cherished the time that he spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his always-supportive wife, Harlan Cannon Moore of Lake Charles. He was especially amazed and grateful for Harlan’s love and care towards the end of his days on earth, frequently expressing this sentiment to Brad.
He is also survived by a daughter, Melanie Moore Lee and her husband Everett Lee of Lake Charles, LA; a son, David Brad Moore and his wife Kelli Arnold Moore of New Orleans, LA; two special granddaughters, Lydia Lee and Hannah Lee; three awesome grandsons, Matthew Moore, Andrew Moore and Joel Moore; a brother, Charles Moore and his wife Billie Sue of DeBerry, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nora Moore; two sisters, Gloria Knutson and Nell Spring; three brothers, Harold Moore, Stanley Moore and James Moore; and close friends Elmer Conner and Johnny Bradley.
A special thanks to Dr. Ben Thompson, Dr. Chris Thompson and Dr. Carl Nabours for their special care and concern during his latter days.
