Obituary:

Dr. David Louis Autin

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Dr. David Louis Autin, 59, who died on Monday, December 5, 2011.

Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.

Reverend Chester Arceneaux, Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Reverend F. Hampton Davis, III and Reverend Monsignor Keith J. DeRouen will serve as concelebrants. Giftbearers and Eulogists will be his children, Julia Autin, Robert Autin, M.D. and Camille Autin. Members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary People’s Choir, under the direction of Cartez Winters, will sing for the services.

Survivors include his two daughters, Julia Marie Autin and Camille Marie Autin; one son, Robert Louis Autin, M.D., all of Lafayette, LA; their mother, Joanie Domengeaux Autin of Lafayette, LA; his father, Ruby Louis Autin of Thibodaux, LA; and four sisters, Drusilla Schifani of Memphis, TN, Pamela Fossier of Lafayette, LA, Audrey Henkel of Athens, GA and Loretta Register of Paragould, AR. and numerous nieces and nephews, with whom he shared a close bond.

He was preceded in death by his son, Eraste Thomas Autin; his mother, Ora Legendre Autin; and one sister, Deanie Coman.

A native of Thibodaux, Louisiana and resident of Lafayette for most of his life, Dr. Autin was a loving father, son, brother and friend to all who knew him. He attended Mount Carmel School, Thibodaux College Elementary and E.D. White Catholic High School before graduating from USL in Lafayette and LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1978, completing his residency in Urology in 1983 at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. Dr. Autin was an altar server during his elementary and high school years. At E. D. White, he served as Student Council President and also played football. His team won the State Championship in 1968 and 1969, and during that time he served as the team Captain, was All State on offense and defense, and was also selected for the All State Super Team. Dr. Autin was also actively involved in basketball (B-Team) and track and field. On scholarship under Coach Russ Faulkinberry, his football days continued at USL, which made its last Bowl Game appearance known as the Grantland Rice Bowl in 1970.

Dr. Autin was a local Urologist in Lafayette who loved his patients and always took the time to get to know them. He was voted by his peers one of the best Urologists in the state. He also hosted an annual party for all World War II Veterans. Dr. Autin was a lifelong lover of Grand Isle where he grew up and eventually had a family camp there, The Cancoon. He was a wonderful Doctor who truly cared for his patients, and loved and cherished his family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pallbearers will be Cory Register, Chad Register, Freddie Fossier, Emile Fossier, Camille Fossier, Hubert Fossier, Rex Moroux and William Bayard. Honorary pallbearers will be John Azar, M.D., Michael Credeur, Byron Talbot, Nathan Musso, Mickey Marceaux, Frank Cardinale, M.D., Eustice Thibodeaux, Chester Weimer, M.D., Truett Ray, M.D., Paul Breaux, M.D., Nathan Thornton, Harley Gros, Alfred Robicheaux, M.D., Joe Fakier, Richard Borne DDS , Bill Burley, Eddie Chaisson, M.D. and Mike Melancon.

A Rosary will be recited by Drew Schifani on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 6:00 PM in Martin & Castille’s DOWNTOWN location.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Thursday from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until time of services.

Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Autin’s name to the Eraste Thomas Autin Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 3668 Lafayette, Louisiana 70502.
