Dan “Sonny” Roy, Jr.

1936 – 1995

“Sonny” was the son of the late Daniel Roy, Sr., and former Emma Conque Roy. A native of the Lafayette-Carencro area, he spent most of his adult life in Acadiana. He graduated from Carencro High in 1954 and earned his bachelor’s degree in H&PE at USL in 1958. While attending USL, he was a four-year varsity letterman as a baseball pitcher and member of the basketball team.

Roy entered the coaching profession in 1958 as football assistant and head basketball coach at Breaux Bridge High, moving up to head football coach there in ’59 and ’60, winning 20 of 23 games and claiming two district titles.

His success at Breaux Bridge earned him an appointment to the USL athletic staff in ’61 as head baseball coach. His duties also included serving as assistant basketball coach under Beryl Shipley. He left USL for one football season at Glen Oaks High School in Baton Rouge before returning in February of ’64 as assistant football and head baseball coach for the Cajuns.

“Sonny” spent 11 years as assistant under Russ Faulkinberry and Augie Tammeriello before moving in ’75 to U. of Texas El Paso for two seasons. He returned again to USL in ’77 as Director of Auxillary Services, and in ’78 was appointed Athletic Director, a post he held for four years. It was in this span that USL moved to Division I-A status.

In 1982 Roy entered the private sector as vice president of sales for Mar-Con Manufacturing Co., Inc., and held that post for 13 years. Under Roy’s leadership the company grew from upstart newcomer into a major player in the intensely competitive industry.

“Sonny” died at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans after suffering a heart attack following USL’s football contest against Tulane. He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Harrington of Lafayette; one daughter, two sons, two sisters and eight grandchildren.
