Home Phone: 337-582-6691 C.J.’s Living Memorial for Coach Shipley’s Tribute is followed a message he sent to his teammates in 2013. His LM was submitted on Nov. 7, 2017 and posted by Dr. Ed Dugas that day. I have always loved the game of basketball! In 1962, I heard about a college coach at USL who loved defense. Having cut off the ends of three fingers on my shooting hand while in high school, I thought defense was my best ticket to playing ball at the next level. With my tennis shoes thrown over my shoulders, I hitch-hiked down Highway 90 from Iowa to Lafayette to a walk-on try out. Coach Shipley told me to come to summer school and practice every day and he would give me a chance. He helped me know that it takes more than a great jump shot to be a good basketball player. According to Coach Shipley, it takes determination, discipline, practice and a big heart. I think my secret to making the team was that I loved the game as much as he did and I did everything he wanted and needed, including practicing three times on Christmas Day. I have carried this work ethic and the lessons learned during those years through the rest of my life. He was a man of his word and it was an honor to call him “Coach”. * * * * * Those who knew me, I challenge you to email me something that will remind me of the good old days.
