Russ Faulkinberry’s Living Memorial, Chockey Kassem – Football 1957-60, Coach 1969-72 This is my tribute to my friend, mentor and my former boss. Had I not chosen to forego my Senior season in football, I would have had the opportunity to play for Coach Faulkinberry (I never called him Russ). He replaced Red Hoggatt in the Spring of 1961. 1961 was the year I graduated. Because I chose to coach as a career, I had the opportunity to get to know Coach while I was coaching high school football in Lafayette. He hired me as an Assistant Coach in 1969. He was my kind of Coach. He was a hardnosed, coach who demanded 110% from his players on and off the field. He gave his staff the leeway to coach our positions and develop as coaches. He won 2 conference football championships as Head Coach, something that no other USL coach had done before. I have a lot of good memories of knowing and working with Coach that I will always cherish.
