Former Track & Field: Charles Wimberley – USATF & Master TF Superstar & Ragin’ Cajuns Hero

Posted in AN News on Aug. 8, 2012

Congratulations to Charles Wimberley, Track & Field, 1953-56 – his story is one of outstanding accomplishments.

Each year the USATF includes a National meet for Masters. This year the meet was held in Lisle, Illinois on Aug. 2 to Aug 5.

I ran in the 400 meters, 800 meters, 4 X 100 Relay and the 4 X 400 Relay. The winner of the 400,
Bob Lida set an American Record by running 65.3 seconds, I was 2nd. The following day, I competed
in the 800 and won. My time was slower than I wanted to run, but my strategy was to win, regardless
of the time, so I ran with the pack until the 2nd 400, then moved away quickly and won. The next
day, Bob Lida organized our relays and we won both the 4 X 100 & 4 X 400.

Results: 1 Silver and 3 Gold medals.

Bob and I, as well as the other runners in our relays, run for the Houston Elite Track Club.

Along the way in 1992, when I was 58, I set the record (single age) in the 2 mile run, on the track
at 11:14. the record still stands. Later at age 60 (1994), we organized four old guys, ages 60 to62, and
set the record for the Sprint Medley, which still stands. Since I starting running in the Master’s
Track Nationals, I have won 18 National Championships. Not including four in the Nat’l Senior
Games.

(Footnote added 8/10/12)
At age 55, I competed in the Master’s World Championships and
got 5th in the 800 meters (2:12) and won the bronze (3rd) in the 1500 (4:29). Had to run 7 prelims since
there were over 80 in each event.

Footnote information provided by Charles Wimberley

After graduating from SLI (1956), I applied and was accepted to graduate school at LSU. About mid semester,
I got my draft notice, however, the draft board allowed me to finish the semester.

After basic training at Ft. Bliss,
I was sent to the Presidio Army base in San Francisco and assigned to the NIKE Missile training group.

About the 3rd week, the Base newspaper carried an article about athletes needed for the football and track team.

Checked with my commanding officer and was allowed to try out for the track team.

Made the team and was quite impressed, since Ernie Sheldon, Nat’l Champion in the high jump, Dean Smith, Nat’l champion in the sprints, and Bill Nieder, Nat’l champion in the shot put, were also on the team.

Most of the other selected track members had completed college and were highly ranked. We competed in college meets on the West Coast, but did not count in the scoring. Our big meet was the Western Army Meet.

After track season, I was again assigned to the Nike Missile Program and stationed at Ft. Baker, across the
Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

In addition to the work, I (fast) pitched for the local softball team. Was the ‘Player of the Week’ once after pitching a one hitter and hitting a home run and two singles in a game against the team from the Presidio.

Prior to the assignment to the Nike Program, it was necessary to get a ‘Secret’ clearance.

My mother wrote to me asking if I had done anything wrong, since someone from the Army had gone to the Church Point
Police Station and the sheriff’s office, inquiring about me.

Was discharged in 1958 and took a job as a Math teacher in Morgan City. That lasted one year, then went
to work for an oilfield supply company.

In 1975, I started my own Oilfield Service business and by 1980 had
195 employees.

Unfortunately, the oil industry almost shut down in the early ’80’s and I had to readjust.

In 1989, I developed a process to safely remove radiation from oilfield equipment and was the first company in
Louisiana to get licensed to perform that work.

Sold the company in 1995 and retired for a couple of weeks, then decided if I wanted to stay ‘sane’, I’d better do something, so became a Radiation Consultant, and still get calls from oil refineries for consulting work.
