Former Track: Richard Finishes 5th In Javelin at National Senior Games

Louisville – Lafayette’s Charlie Richard finished fifth in the javelin throw at the 2007 National Senior Games in Louisville, Ky.

Richard’s toss of 112-10′ trailed four other efforts, including the winning throw of 130-05′, but was good enough for fifth place out of 21 competitors in the 70-74 age division.

Local senior seeking sixth straight crown

Lafayette’s Charlie Richard has been the measuring stick in the long jump almost as many times as he has entered the Senior Olympics Summer National Senior Games.
It’s no different at this year’s games in Louisville, Ky., as Richard takes aim at his sixth straight national crown and seventh overall in the biennial competition.

Some 32 athletes are entered in the event in the 70-74 age group, 31 of them trying to halt Richard’s remarkable streak.

“The long jump is my No. 1 thing,” said Richard, who departs on Thursday. “It’s my favorite.”
Richard, who will be attending his ninth National Senior Games, is also entered in the triple jump, javelin, hammer throw and 100 and 200-meter dashes. He has been the javelin runner-up, and was 9th in the 200 at the 2005 Games in Pittsburgh, but leaping will be his legacy.

“The triple jump will be competed at nationals for the first time this year,” Richard said. “I hope to set a pretty good jump. The winner will obviously be the national record, but I’d like to do something that will hold for a while.”

The triple jump, hammer (also a first-time national event) and 100 preliminaries will be next Tuesday. Richard will be in the long jump and possibly the 100 finals on Wednesday, with the 200 prelims on Thursday. The 200 finals and javelin are next Friday.

Richard has also been chosen to be a flag bearer for Louisiana’s contingent in next Saturday’s Celebration of Athletes ceremonies, joined by Waggaman’s Jenny and Landry Camardelle.

“I try to go and train every day at UL, but it’s been tough with the weather,” Richard said. “A week or so back, I decided to go at 1:30-2 p.m., before the rain, but it was hot. All you can do is do it when you can, if you can.

“I’m not quite where I’d like to be for nationals, but maybe there are some others in the same shape.”

Other local athletes joining Richard at nationals are Bill Domingues, Dr. Bob Rivet, Steve Gitz and Sandra Matthieu.

Gitz is working on a streak of his own, with four straight national titles in horseshoe throwing.

Charlie Richard’s events at next week’s National Senior Games in Louisville, Ky.:

Triple jump (14 entered), long jump (32), javelin (35), hammer throw (12), 100 meters (38), 200 meters (39).
