Charlie’s Living Memorial below was written for the 2001 Shipley Reunion and is being used as his LM for the Shipley Tribute. Posted by Dr. Ed Dugas on Oct. 1, 2017.

Basketball Team Member, 1963-1968

I was graduated from Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Louisiana in
1963.

While in high school, I played for Derwood Duke (SLI – 1958) for four years. During this time, I was named to the 1-A All District team and to the Class-A All State team.

In the summer of 1961, Coach Shipley and Coach Roy “visited” Coach Duke at the gym where six of us were playing a pick up game. Coach Shipley, I believe, was more interested in a senior by the name of Donnie Jones than he was in anyone else. At the time, I had no idea who the two men watching us play were.

I was recruited by several different schools during my senior year, but as soon as Coach Shipley showed a little interest in me, I knew where I wanted to go. I enrolled at USL in the fall of 1963 and struggled (and I do mean struggled) to be a player until I graduated in 1968. The most I can say is, “Thanks Coach for the patience (and I know it took a lot of patience) you showed during this period of time.”

In the spring of 1968, I married Dianne Guy (USL – 1967). We have two children, Stuart and Katy. Stuart is married to Traci Guidry from Westlake and Katy is married to Neil Peveto from Sulphur. We have no grandchildren, but quite a menagerie of granddogs and grandcats.

I started my career in education as a teacher/coach at Plaucheville High School in Avoyelles Parish in the fall of 1968. Over the next eight years or so, I literally chased the game of basketball all over the state of Louisiana (or perhaps the basketball was doing the chasing).

I entered the Calcasieu Parish School System in 1974. In 1976, I “retired” from coaching and became a classroom teacher. I earned a Masters of Education Degree from McNeese in 1982. At the current time, I am teaching physical education at Vinton Elementary School.

“Thanks again Coach for all that you have done for me and all your players.” I would not take a million dollars for my experiences in Coach Shipley’s program.

Updated 11/22/2018 by Katy English Doucet.

My brother Stuart English is still married to Traci Guidry. Then have one son Jacob English.

I am now married to Corey Doucet. We have two children Molly Peveto and Ethan Doucet.

As you know, Molly has grown up attending many athletic events. She loved my daddy so much.

I recently got married to my high school sweetheart. Ethan is my husband’s son. My husband graduated from UL in 1997.

Thank you so much for doing all of this for us. My family greatly appreciates you.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Katy English Doucet
