Basball: Harst to focus on degree

Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • April 20, 2009

UL outfielder/catcher Chance Harst has left the baseball team to focus on completing his undergraduate degree before pursuing a master’s degree in business administration. The junior made the move after speaking coach Tony Robichaux following Thursday’s practice.

Harst, a Lafayette native, has missed most of the season with a severely strained oblique muscle. The former St. Thomas More standout was hitting .158 in five games this year before getting hurt.

The news was first reported at theadvertiser.com.

“He felt that the commitment he needed to make was to finish up school and get his MBA,” Robichaux said. “He didn’t want to cheat us and cheat the team. I respect that he came to me like a man and said he wanted to go to school full time.”

Given that Harst had missed so much time this season, the coaching staff was optimistic that he would qualify for and receive a medical redshirt. His departure leaves a big hole to replace in the lineup and in the field. Last year, Harst was second on the team with nine home runs and won the Cajuns Gold Glove with no errors in the field.

After hitting .445 with 14 homers and 63 RBIs as a senior at STM, Harst was drafted in the 37th round by the Kansas City Royals. He spent one year at Southern Miss, hitting .238 with three doubles and four RBIs before transferring to UL.

Robichaux was sad to see Harst leave but understood his reasoning.

“The big thing is you can never discount a guy who wants to finish up school,” Robichaux said. “That’s what was in his heart. We were disappointed because he’s three guys on the 25-man roster – a hitter, an outfielder and a catcher.

“I wish the injury wouldn’t have occurred so we could have had him on the field all season and maybe that keeps him moving forward. But we definitely wish him the best of luck. He has a lot of friends in this clubhouse.”

Odds and Ends

With the three-game sweep this weekend, South Alabama extended its lead in the all-time series, 50-31. The Cajuns have still won 22 of the past 37 meetings, including nine of 13 … UL hadn’t been swept in back-to-back weekends in a conference series since getting swept at McNeese State, at Lamar and against McNeese State while in the Southland Conference during the 1980 season … UL outfielder/designated hitter Les Smith is scheduled to start his throwing rehab in the middle of this week. The freshman suffered a “mild” torn labrum in his right shoulder on April 3 … In the USA media guide, junior pitcher Chris LaGrow said that he signed with the Jaguars over Notre Dame, UL and West Virginia … USA outfielder/pitcher Brandon Brown has two famous cousins – musician Alan Jackson and PGA golfer Damon Green … USA second baseman Zach Grichor has some interesting football ties. His grandfather, Jim Garrity, played football at Penn State. His uncle, Gregg Garrity, also played at Penn State and later spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles.
