Chad Hebert fell into coaching tennis almost by accident, but he has grown into one of the more effective professionals in Louisiana at his craft.

The City Club at River Ranch pro was named last weekend as the Louisiana Pro of the Year at the U.S. Tennis Professional Association (USPTA) conference in Covington.

“Obviously, I knew I was nominated,” Hebert said, “but you’re always honored to be recognized by your peers. They’re a group of teaching pros, and they decide the award based on how you grow the game in the state, not just at your club.

“From last year to this year, I’ve brought 275 more players into the game, which is significant. I think that’s why they gave me the award.”

Hebert will be the 12-under Junior Davis Cup coach, and pupils like Jake Lucidi, Jordan Daigle, Christopher Laborde, Lex Pierre, Carolina Fruge, Katherine Fruge, Samantha Bowling, Tori Pradier, Julia Delcambre and Alexandra Fruge are all top junior players under him.

Hebert, who also is involved in free clinics for the Boys and Girls Clubs and Girl Scouts, values the interaction with his students.

As a junior player at Middle Tennessee, Hebert was asked to be a player-coach at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn. That opened the door to an award-winning profession that included a stop as an assistant for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns.

“That threw me for a loop when they asked me,” Hebert said of the Lambuth offer.

“That piqued my interest for coaching the game. I finished my degree in 1994 and wanted to stay in Division I tennis. UL’s coach at the time, Dan Holden, is from Mufreesboro, so we immediately had a connection. And, both my parents went to UL and I had two sisters who went here.

“Then I got the job at Troy and was there for four years. When they built City Club in 2001, they called Ashley (Director of Tennis Ashley Rhoney) and I to be the pros.”

Hebert may have gotten into coaching in an unusual way, but he’s made the most of that decision.
