Former UL quarterback Brooks Haack has joined Northwestern State’s football team as a graduate transfer and will take part in spring drills next month, the Southland Conference school announced Friday.

Haack started eight games last season and played in 10 for the 4-8 Ragin’ Cajuns, but left when it became clear youngsters Jordan Davis and Chris Weaver would compete for the starting job in 2016.

He will have one season of eligibility at Northwestern State.

The product of Katy High in Texas completed 123-of-201 passes (61.2 percent) for 1,407 yards and five touchdowns this past season for UL, which also has moved quarterback Jalen Nixon — who opened the other four games – to running back.

Haack also played in five games as UL’s backup in 2013 and six in 2014, giving him 21 total appearances as a Cajun.

Northwestern State returns two juniors-to-be at quarterback, J.D. Almond and Joel Blumenthal.

Last season Almond threw for 528 yards over six games, Blumenthal 264 yards in 10 games and late-season starter Stephen Rivers 1,394 over nine games for the 4-7 Demons.

Rivers was a senior in 2015.

“Brooks (Haack) adds another guy to that position with playing experience … and it should be an exciting spring practice,” Northwestern State coach Jay Thomas said in a statement released by the school.

According to Thomas, Haack “passed up an internship working with” University of Houston offensive coordinator Major Applewhite “to come here and play this fall, so he’s driven to compete, even though he’s already graduated, and wants to see his career through.”

Haack was 8-of-9 for 187 yards in UL’s 2015 win over Northwestern State, an FCS program.

UL and NSU don’t play in 2016.

Haack isn’t being handed the No. 1 spot, and will compete with Almond and Blumenthal, but it seems likely he’ll get a fair shot at winning the starting job.

“We have J.D. and Joel with experience in our system and they’ve both done well for us in games,” Thomas said. “They’ll be better in their second seasons.

“We have a need in this recruiting class for a couple of quarterbacks,” he added, “and adding an experienced one now is a great lift.”
