CajunBlog: Former coach headed for Dolphins

It zipped right by in the daily wire transactions, but one of the particulars in UL’s recent NCAA inquiries moved from the college to the professional ranks Monday.
Former Cajun strength and conditioning coach Brad Ohrt was hired Monday as assistant strength and conditioning coach of the Miami Dolphins. Ohrt was on the UL staff for three years before going to Western Kentucky prior to the 2005 football season.

Ohrt was one of the UL coaches involved in alleged violations — one of them the most minor and the silliest of the four — turned up by NCAA investigators last year.

One of the two alleged football violations was the presentation of award T-shirts to football players who had reached certain levels of proficiency in Ohrt’s off-season training. Yes, it’s a violation to give a kid a $5 T-shirt, but ironically if that shirt had been presented in a $75 frame it would have been perfectly legal.

Thank you, NCAA rules makers.

The other violation that mentioned Ohrt was the monitoring of Cajun players during “voluntary” summer workouts. UL’s coaching staff had access to lists of who was taking part in the summer weight and training sessions and their performances in lifting and other testing.

Again, it’s a violation, and this one’s more serious. But it’s funny that very few schools ever get called on the carpet for it.

Steve Spurrier was quoted in several media outlets last summer discussing how many of his South Carolina players were missing the “voluntary” workouts, listing many by name. Just having that information constitutes a violation.

At least Ohrt’s somewhere now where all the teams are treated the same.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns have suffered a setback before they can even take the field for the 2005 football season.

Strength and conditioning coach Brad Ohrt has left that role at UL and is taking a similar position at Western Kentucky University, packing up and moving this week just days before the Cajuns report back for preseason drills.

Like UL, WKU is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, but the Hilltoppers compete in Division 1-AA in football, so the Cajuns have lost a vital member of their athletic staff to a program that competes at a lower level.

However, Ohrt was in charge of conditioning for all of the Cajuns’ men’s and women’s athletic squads, while his new position at WKU will solely involve the football program and will include a pair of assistants.

For Cajun football coach Rickey Bustle, the departure is a frustrating one after he replaced two assistant coaches last spring.

Ron Hudson has stepped into the offensive line coaching position vacated when Mike Gibson accepted a position in the Canadian Football League.

New secondary coach Terry Sims came on board in the spring to replace Clay Jennings, who left after two years on Bustle’s staff to accept a pay raise for a similar position at the University of Houston.

“We almost lost Brad earlier to Appalachian State, his alma mater,” Bustle said. “Now he’s leaving for a 1-AA program. I hate to see him go.”

UL is already under way with a search to replace Nelson Schexnayder, who resigned as athletic director last week to accept another position within the university.
