Football: UL’s Anderson Headed to Southern Miss

For the second time in a year, UL head football coach Rickey Bustle must find a new offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
Blake Anderson, hired by the Ragin’ Cajuns in January 2007, told The Daily Advertiser on Wednesday he is leaving for a coaching job at Southern Miss.

Anderson will serve as the running game coordinator/quarterbacks coach under first-year coach Larry Fedora, who was hired by the Golden Eagles on Dec. 12.

His hiring is pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.
After visiting with Fedora last Friday, Anderson said he made his decision to leave UL last weekend. Anderson told Bustle of his plans Monday.

“It’s a chance to work with people I’ve known for years,” Anderson said. “Larry and I have been friends for the past 10 or 12 years. (New Southern Miss offensive coordinator) Darrell Wyatt has been a friend of mine for 15 years now.

“There’s a lot of potential in this job, and I like the job security that comes with that. It was something I felt I needed to do for me and my family.”

Anderson was hired by UL to replace Rob Christophel, who in December 2006 was fired by Bustle along with defensive coordinator Brent Pry, wide receivers coach Brian Crist and cornerbacks coach Terry Sims.

The Cajuns finished with one of the nation’s top rushing attacks in their only season under Anderson.

They became the first Sun Belt Conference team to rush for at least 3,000 yards in a season and ranked sixth nationally in rushing yards per game (251.6) after going 3-9.

Anderson joined UL after a two-year hiatus from coaching. In his previous coaching job, the Texas native was co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach at Middle Tennessee State from 2002 to ’04. He previously coached at New Mexico (1999-2001) and Trinity Valley Community College (1995-98) after playing at both Baylor and Sam Houston State.

Anderson said he recommended current UL offensive line coach Ron Hudson for the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach job with the Cajuns.

Bustle said leaving UL was a move Anderson felt he had to make.

“Our search (for a new coach) is underway,” Bustle said. “We have no time table, but we’ll be talking to people in the near future.

“We’re looking for the guy who fits best for us and will do what works best for us.”
