Football: Gautier excited over first start

Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • November 12, 2010

When Blaine Gautier signed with UL back in 2008, he did so with a plan in mind. Eventually, the athletic left-hander wanted to be the team’s starting quarterback.

With juniors Chris Masson and Brad McGuire both hurt, Gautier finally gets that opportunity Saturday as the Ragin’ Cajuns (2-7, 2-3 Sun Belt) travel to Florida Atlantic (3-5, 2-3).

It will be the first start for the 6-foot, 205-pounder since his senior season at Lutcher High School in 2007.

“It will definitely be exciting,” Gautier said. “It’s unfortunate that two of our starting quarterbacks had to go down. I just want to come out and play as hard as I can and win this game.”

Before coming to UL, Gautier honed his skills at Lutcher High. He led that program to the Class 3A state title and earned All-State honors as a junior in 2006 after passing for 2,785 yards and 31 touchdowns and rushing for 161 yards and two scores.

Gautier posted similar passing numbers (2,743 yards and 30 TDs) during his senior season in 2007 but improved his rushing stats to 666 yards and 17 scores. He once again was an All-State selection as well as the Warrick Dunn WAFB Player of the Year as the top football player in the Baton Rouge area and the District 10-31 MVP.

Memphis, Southern Miss, Central Michigan and TCU also recruited Gautier, but he eventually committed and signed with the Cajuns.

Gautier, who redshirted as a freshman in 2008, has limited college experience over the past two years. He was 9-of-17 passing for 119 yards and one touchdown and had 24 yards and one score on 14 rushes last season.

McGuire moved to H-back for spring drills after last season, giving Gautier a chance to get additional reps as the primary backup behind Masson.

Last April, Gautier was one of four UL football players suspended from the team indefinitely after being arrested for allegedly cultivating marijuana. Gautier rejoined the team in June after an investigation revealed that he did no wrongdoing.

A broken finger slowed Gautier early this season, but he still served as the short-yardage and goal-line quarterback until McGuire returned for the sixth game.

Gautier, also once bothered by turf toe this year, has completed 11-of-24 passes for 110 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns and rushed for 71 yards and three scores on 31 carries.

“It’s been a mental thing,” Gautier said about waiting for his chance. “I’ve been sitting back watching Chris and Brad and trying to learn from them. I’ve just been patient, and now I’m getting my opportunity.”

Linebacker Devon Lewis-Buchanan believes in his roommate.

“I’m confident in his abilities, just like he should be,” Lewis-Buchanan said. “I feel that he has a good arm and a good knowledge of the offense. He brings a running threat and can spread the ball around.”

UL coach Rickey Bustle is confident in Gautier despite his lack of college experience.

“He’s a talented young man,” Bustle said. “We’ve made some tweaks to some things in what we’ll do offensively, and I think that will help him out a lot. That will allow him to focus more on the game.”

After a week of getting reps as the starter, Gautier said that he is more than prepared for Saturday.

Football: Freshman QB committed to getting better

Joshua Parrott jparrott@theadvertiser.com August 20, 2009

Blaine Gautier knows that sophomores Brad McGuire and Chris Masson are still fighting for the starting quarterback job at UL.

While McGuire or Masson is expected to start in the team’s Sept. 5 opener against Southern University, Gautier will likely see some action this fall because of his playmaking abilities. The redshirt freshman spent the summer breaking down film and digesting the playbook and has carried that forward progress in fall camp.

“I was really focused and put in a lot of hard work in the summer,” Gautier said. “I’ve definitely gotten smarter with the offense and know more protection-wise. Right now I’m just trying to get more experience.”

Gautier was a proven dual-threat at Lutcher High School, earning all-state honors in each of his last two seasons. As a junior, the lefty passed for 2,785 yards and 31 touchdowns as Lutcher won the Class 3A state title. He accounted for 47 touchdowns as a senior, including 30 scores and 2,743 yards in the air, and won the Warrick Dunn Player of the Year award as the top player in the greater Baton Rouge area.

After sitting out as a redshirt last season, Gautier had a strong showing in spring drills. He did enough to be in the conversation at quarterback, likely as a change of pace for the team’s no-huddle, spread option offense.

“Blaine is a guy who is going to figure into it,” UL head coach Rickey Bustle said. “It’s going to depend on how much progress he makes mentally because physically he does some great things.”

With another two weeks to go in fall camp, Gautier is preparing in case he needs to carry the load at quarterback if McGuire or Masson get hurt.

Injury report
UL released its weekly injury report Wednesday, and it’s a long list.

There are 16 players out for Saturday’s 9 a.m. scrimmage. Defensive end Nate Douglas is out for the season after not being cleared medically. Defensive end Justin Anderson (shoulder) and offensive lineman Evan Ruiz (back) are out indefinitely after not being cleared medically.

Thirteen other players are out for the scrimmage, including eight on offense and five on defense. The offensive list includes kicker Brett Baer (hip), tight end Luke Aubrey (ill), wide receiver Richie Falgout (back), offensive linemen Nasser Jamal (knee), Sean Osborne (ill) and Josh Robinson (shoulder), wide receiver Ross Goodlett (hamstring) and tight end Dusty Mack (foot).

On defense, the following players are out Saturday: defensive tackles Jermaine Rogers (ankle) and LaQuincy Williams (head/jaw), linebackers Richard Brooks (knee) and Devon Lewis-Buchanan (finger) and free safety Seth Guilbeaux (head).

Three other players wide receiver Marlin Miller (knee), defensive tackle Brandon McCray (ankle) and cornerback Tim Jackson (ankle) are questionable for the upcoming scrimmage.

Offense shines
The Cajuns scrimmaged for 16 series (eight-play, red zone and goal line) in full pads during the final period of Wednesday’s practice.

The offense was sharp, scoring eight times against a defensive unit that struggled to keep pace. McGuire hit wide receiver Louis Lee for a 70-yard touchdown pass on the first play and added two more scores one rushing, one passing in goal line situations.

Masson threw for three touchdowns. Running backs Undrea Sails and Matt Dupre ran for scores to cap a dominating day for the offense.

“The offense came out to play today, and the defense did not,” Bustle said. “I hate to see that because these guys have all been working hard. They just weren’t focused today. The offense went right through them.”

Odds and ends
Linebacker Antwyne Zanders was back at practice Wednesday after leaving the field on a cart in the final minutes of Tuesday’s workout. He was dealing with severe muscle cramps on Tuesday “ Starting left guard Ian Burks, who had been out for the past week with a head injury, also returned to the field Tuesday but is slowly working his way back. Redshirt freshman Jaron Odom took most of the snaps at left guard.
