Cecilia’s Davis picks UL

Joshua Parrott jparrott@theadvertiser.com July 26, 2009

Bianca Davis figures that her decision to play basketball at UL is a win-win situation.

After earning all-state honors as a junior, the point guard from Cecilia High School has verbally committed to sign with the Ragin’ Cajuns. The earliest that the rising senior can sign a binding national letter of intent is during the NCAA’s early signing period, which is Nov. 12-19.

“It’s close to home, and I think I can really help the team out,” said Davis, who is on pace to qualify but still needs to take the ACT. “I’ve watched them play a lot, and they really need a point guard to carry them.

“I feel if I go there that I can be a big help and help them get better.”

Davis emerged as one of the state’s top scorers last season, earning second team all-state honors in Class 3A and third team all-Acadiana recognition. She averaged 19.9 points, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and one steal per game as Cecilia made what was believed to be the first playoff appearance in school history.

In the regular season finale, the 5-foot-3 point guard scored 32 points to help the Bulldogs beat defending Class 3A state champion Iota and advance to the postseason. Cecilia, which finished third in District 6-3A, fell in the opening round of the playoffs to eventual state champion Capitol.

Davis, also a standout volleyball player, said she is in position to become the third member of her family to be a student-athlete at UL. Her brother, Ricky Arceneaux, played football for the Cajuns, while her aunt, Geraldine (Davis) Walker, lettered for the women’s basketball team from 1980-81.

According to Davis, she received interest from McNeese State, UL Monroe and NCAA Division II member Abilene Christian (Texas) University before pledging to UL. She got her first scholarship offer from the Cajuns.

“I think she’s going to be a great addition for them,” said Eric Narcisse, an assistant coach at Cecilia last season. “She’s a great ball-handler and can get to the basket. She’s a flashy kid. But obviously there’s still a lot of room for her to improve.”

Davis’ scoring ability, Narcisse said, overshadows her other skills because she was one of only nine players on a team last season with no seniors. He added that her shot selection must improve at the next level.

“She didn’t have the luxury of being a point guard and just creating for her teammates,” Narcisse said. “The team needed her to score. She’s extremely tough and extremely strong. She played every single second with the ball in her hands and only came out when she got hurt.

“She has the desire to get better. She wants to be great.”
