Northwestern State didn’t have to look far to find its new softball coach, since former UL All-American Becky McMurtry was already on hand.
McMurtry, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ all-time leader in career hitting (.402), served as interim coach at Northwestern this spring. NSU athletic director Greg Burke removed the interim tag on Monday.

It’s a challenge for me and I love challenges. I’m a very, very, very competitive person,” McMurtry said. I’ve been to the World Series. I’ve played pro ball. I know what it takes to succeed at this level.”

Her World Series trip came with the Cajuns in 2003 when she helped UL go 47-11 and take an NCAA Regional victory in Fullerton, Calif. She hit .426 that season in winning her second Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honor, becoming the first player in league history to win that honor back-to-back.

The Nebraska native played her first two seasons at Illinois State before coming to UL. After graduation, she played for the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch League and spent 2004-05 as a teacher and coach at Lafayette High. She took the assistant’s post at NSU in September 2005 and was elevated to interim head coach last January when Mike Pernciaro left for Wichita State.

NSU was 28-32 in McMurtry’s interim season.

We’re working toward being not satisfied with making it to regionals,” she said, but winning games there to have a chance to get to the World Series. It’s not an overnight process, but it is an achievable goal.”

Northwestern State names former Louisiana-Lafayette All-American Becky McMurtry assistant

September 21, 2005 – Matt Hebert, Sports Information –

NATCHITOCHES — New Northwestern State softball coach Jeff Dabney has
picked former Louisiana-Lafayette All-American third baseman Becky McMurtry
as his top assistant coach.

A three-time All-American, McMurtry played in the National Pro Fastpitch
League for the Akron Racers in 2004, then spent the 2004-05 academic year as
a teacher and coach at Lafayette High School. Her appointment is contingent
upon approval by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana
system.

“Becky is a great addition to our team. Her background as a three-time
All-American and her time playing professionally will be a valuable asset,”
said Dabney. “She compliments my coaching style and our philosophies are
very similar. She is a competitor, and has a burning desire to help our
program become one of the best.

“Becky is a great young coach and teacher of the game. Our softball team
instantly became better when she accepted the position. I am very happy to
have her with us,” said Dabney.

McMurtry, 24, helped lead Louisiana-Lafayette to the 2003 Women’s
College World Series and was a first-team All-America selection. She
finished her career as the Lady Cajuns’ all-time leader with a .402 career
batting average.

As a senior, she became the first repeat selection as Sun Belt
Conference Player of the Year. While posting a 15-game hitting streak for
the second time in two seasons at ULL, she also played 22 consecutive
errorless games at third base.

While on the way to being named the 2002 Sun Belt Player and Newcomer of
the Year, McMurtry hit three home runs off future USA Olympic gold medalist
pitcher Jennie Finch in a three-game series against Arizona. That season,
she set school single-season records for total bases (151), extra base hits
(40) and slugging percentage (.766).

She was also an Academic All-District VI first-team selection for the
Lady Cajuns.

She played her first two seasons at Illinois State, where she won
All-America honors in 2001 after hitting .354 with six home runs and 29
RBIs. McMurtry led the Redbirds to an NCAA Regional berth while pacing her
squad in seven offensive categories. She was the Missouri Valley Conference
Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2001.

At North Platte (Neb.) Senior High, McMurtry was a “Super State”
selection during her final two years. A three-time All-State selection, she
was valedictorian of her graduating class and was also senior class
president.

She graduated from ULL with an education degree.
