Below the LM for the Coach Cole Tribute, please find Art’s outstanding cross country and track performances. Posted on Sept. 3, 2017 by Dr. Ed Dugas. In 1968 Coach Bob Cole on the recommendation of ex-University of Houston Australian Distance runners offered me a full scholarship which would change my life. My first impression of Bob Cole was that he was supportive, professional and would go the extra yard for his athletes. On my arrival from Australia he met me at the airport, organized academic entrance testing to the University, took me to accommodation and made me aware of the great conditions of a full scholarship. (Not available in Australian Universities then) Over the years he always brought a positive attitude to inspire his He regularly assisted athletes to complete their degrees even after their scholarship time ran out. Academic and athletic abilities were both important to him. Bob Cole was a man ahead of his time in his unprejudiced acceptance of all. He was a caring and thoughtful coach and a good man. Under his guidance both our Track and Field/Cross Country teams were very successful in winning many Gulf States Conference titles in the years I was there. (1968-1972) His confidence in me to help coach the distance runners in my junior and senior years led to my gaining a graduate assistant position at Louisiana Tech University under Coach Jim Mize. Thanks Bob for changing my life and others for the better. * * * * CROSS COUNTRY 1968 Gulf States Conference Team 2nd place. Individual place 8th. 1969 Gulf States Conference Team 1st place.
