Local artist Tony Bernard was worried that one of his latest paintings honoring the UL Ragin’ Cajuns might not see the light of day. Bernard got wind in early summer that UL’s football team would be revealing new uniforms this season, perhaps with a black helmet, a departure from the team’s traditional red helmet. That got Bernard to thinking. He already had the idea of painting four red UL helmets in a row. Now he wondered if he should replace one of those with a black helmet to recognize the new uniforms. “My sister works for UL, so I called her and asked if she could find out if they had black helmets. Nobody could officially tell us anything,” Bernard recalled. “I got a hint that they did have a black helmet, but they didn’t know if it would be unveiled this year or not. I was in a dilemma, but I went ahead and did a black helmet in the group and submitted it to UL and it was approved.” But when the team’s new uniforms were officially unveiled in August, Bernard didn’t see any black helmets, leaving him unsure what to do with his print. He held on to it, wondering if he would have to make any changes. Finally, on Saturday, Bernard got some answers when the Ragin’ Cajuns entered the field in Miami against FIU. “My sister travels with the team and I got a text from her saying that they were on the field with the black helmets,” said Bernard, who was at a function for the Rice Festival when he got the news. “I was so thankful that I didn’t have to make corrections. I have other products, but I thought this could be something really special for the fans.” The black helmets seemed to bring good luck to the Cajuns, with the team beating the heavily favored FIU 36-31 in one of its most important victories in the past few years. Now, the print is for sale exclusively at Louisiana Hot Stuff in Lafayette. Bernard has titled the work “Born Again” in honor of what many fans believe to be a new era for UL football under first-year head coach Mark Hudspeth. “I thought (the helmets) were cool-looking when I got to see the highlights,” he said. “I just feel that with the new coach and the new uniforms, the fans have a new outlook for winning again, and I thought this was appropriate to honor that.”
