The Sun Belt Conference announced its 2007-08 All-Conference Women’s Basketball Team on Tuesday and Louisiana’s senior guard Alicia McDaniel was named to the third team.

The All-SBC selection is the first of McDaniel’s career and marks the fifth straight season the Cajuns have earned an all-conference choice.

Known as one of the Cajuns better defensive players in years past, McDaniel added the scoring element to her game this season. The Houston, Texas native ranked 12th in the conference in scoring, 14th in field goal percentage, 13th in rebounding, 11th in assists and fifth in steals. Only Middle Tennessee’s Amber Holt – a first team selection – and McDaniel were ranked among the conference leaders in scoring, field goal percentage, rebounding, assists and steals.

McDaniel scored in double figures in 20 of her last 21 games dating back to Dec. 18, 2007. Her only non-double figure scoring game was when she fouled out at Troy. The 5-foot-7 guard had four double-doubles – all in Sun Belt play. McDaniel is the Cajuns leader in points, assists and steals and is second in rebounds and third in blocks.

Women’s Basketball: UL senior guard flying well below the radar

Sometimes lost in the midst of a team’s struggles are the individual accomplishments of a persistent leader.
For example, take UL senior Alicia McDaniel. While the Cajun women’s basketball team has lost eight straight Sun Belt Conference contests and 12 of its last 13 coming into today’s game at Denver (8-14 overall, 3-8 SBC), McDaniel is set to make program history.

Granted she plays for UL (5-17, 1-10), McDaniel will become the program’s all-time leader with 115 games played. Former Cajun guard Shaunda Bedel-Johnson played 114 games at UL from 1986-91.

“It will be an honor,” McDaniel said, “but at the same time I want to get some victories under my belt. That’s more on my mind right now.”
Her response should come as no surprise. A quiet person off the court, McDaniel lets her play get the attention on it. She leads the Cajuns in steals per game (2.1) and is second in points per game (12.1) and assists per game (3.0). She’s also third in rebounds per game (5.7).

McDaniel has upped her play on Sun Belt action, averaging 14.2 points per game. She’s scored in double figures in 13 of her last 14 games.

Her play has been an example to UL’s younger players.

“I look up to her a lot,” said freshman guard Jasmine Barnes. “She’s a big motivator. She’s constantly pushing people and telling us not to quit. When she sees our head down she says to pick it up.

“She’s the heart of the team.”

First-year UL coach Errol Rogers said all of his players could learn from McDaniel’s style of play.

“I wish all the kids would play like her,” Rogers said. “I’m just asking them to play hard, and that’s how Alicia plays. She gives it everything she has.

“If we can get the other kids to play like that then we’ll be all right.”

McDaniel’s motivation comes from her family. Her mother and sister make the four-hour drive from Houston whenever they can to see her play.

That dedication helps McDaniel get through the tough times.

“I had my family to always tell me I could do it,” she said. “I had that motivation, and I had that drive to come out and play every night the best I can.

“That tells me that I have dedication from my family, so why can’t I dedicate myself on the basketball court?”
