Women’s Basketball: Late Run Helps North Texas Rally Past Louisiana, 83-74

Doucet posts double-double as Louisiana officially opens 2020-21 season

LAFAYETTE – Ty’Reona Doucet recorded a double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but North Texas used a 26-6 run midway through the second half to erase a third-quarter deficit and earn an 83-74 victory over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Basketball team on Friday at the Cajundome.

Quincy Noble scored 17 of her game-high 30 points in the second half to lead three players in double figures as North Texas (2-1) scored 10 straight points after Louisiana (0-1) took a 60-55 lead on a pair of free throws by Skylar Goodwin with 1:58 remaining in the third quarter.

Madi Townley opened the run for the Mean Green with a bucket before UNT’s pressure forced Louisiana into two straight turnovers off the inbounds. Jazion Jackson made one of two free throws with 1:09 remaining before her steal and layup knotted the game at 60-60.

Townley got a steal on the Ragin’ Cajuns ensuing inbounds pass with Charlene Shepherd scoring on a layup to put North Texas ahead for good, 62-60. After a timeout, Shepherd added a 3-pointer late in the period to give the Mean Green a 65-60 lead.

Louisiana opened the fourth quarter with buckets by Brandi Williams and Doucet to close the gap to 65-64 with 8:15 remaining, but North Texas would put the game away with a 16-1 run that was capped by a Tommisha Lampkin layup with 3:58 left.

Jackson scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for North Texas with Townley posting a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Jomyra Mathis scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures for Louisiana with Makayia Hallmon scoring 14 off the bench, Goodwin adding 12 and Williams 11.

Louisiana will return to action on Wednesday (Dec. 9) when it hosts McNeese in the Virtual Education Game at 11 a.m.

Additionally, the department will communicate any changes to specific entry and attendance protocols for home games.
