LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns senior setter Avery Breaux delivered an all-around effort, impacting several areas of the game, in the team’s key series win at UT Arlington and as a result was named the Sun Belt Conference Setter of the Week on Tuesday.
Breaux scored at least three kills and recorded a double-double of assists and digs in all three matches as Louisiana (17-5, 11-5 Sun Belt) secured the No. 2 seed from the SBC West Division.
Throughout the series in Arlington, Breaux averaged 11.1 assists per set, 3.6 digs per set and posted a .321 hitting percentage on timely dump kills. She averaged at least 3.0 digs per set each contest and the 47 total digs collected marked her highest output in a conference series this season.
In the series-opener, Breaux posted her fourth 50-plus assists effort of the season and a career-high 22 digs to help guide the Ragin’ Cajuns to the reverse sweep which proved to be critical in landing the series victory.
She played a key role in snapping a 1-1 match tie in Friday’s nightcap, scoring a pair of dump kills during a 5-0 run that opened a 16-11 advantage in the third set. Louisiana went on claim that third frame, and ultimately won in four sets to complete the sweep Friday’s doubleheader and secure its position for the SBC Tournament.
It’s the second weekly award bestowed upon Breaux by the Sun Belt Conference. She received the honor for the first time in her career back on Sept. 15.
Breaux joins Andrea Hole (2014) and Jessica Bartczyszyn (2017) as Ragin’ Cajuns setters to earn multiple SBC weekly awards in a single season.
As a team it’s the seventh SBC weekly award of the season for Louisiana, a figure which trails only the eight awards claimed by the 2017 squad.
Breaux and her teammates take a week-long break from competition before traveling to Foley, Ala., for the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Tournament being held at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex from Wednesday, Nov. 18-Sunday, Nov. 22.
