Mixon, Beyer to conclude men’s heptathlon on Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Juliette Smith set a Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field indoor school-record in the women’s pentathlon to highlight the opening day of the 2019 Samford Indoor Multi on Thursday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Smith, who finished fifth in the pentathlon at the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships at the same venue, scored 3,626 points to break the previous school mark (3,553) set by Kaitlyn Moreau in 2015.

The Gainesville, Fla., native, who finished fourth overall in the 17-athlete field, placed second overall in the women’s shot put (38-3 ¼) and was fifth in both the 60-meter hurdles (8.97) and long jump (17-9 ½). Smith added a sixth-place finish in the women’s 800-meter run (2:31.86) and was tied for eighth in the high jump (5-2 ½).

A pair of Ragin’ Cajuns – Chandler Mixon and Franz Beyer – each completed four events during the opening day of the men’s heptathlon. Mixon closed out the first day in the seven-event competition in fifth-place with 2,783 points while Beyer was ninth (2,527).

Mixon recorded a time of 7.26 seconds in the 60-meter dash to place third overall in the event before posting a mark of 21-0 ½ to place sixth in the long jump. Beyer added a seventh-place finish in the shot put (38-10 ½) and eighth-place finish in the long jump (19-10 ¼).

Mixon and Beyer each cleared 6-2 ¾ in the high jump to finish in a fourth-place tie.

The final three events in the men’s heptathlon – 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run – will be completed on Friday.
