STERNER NAMED SBC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEKSenior kicker becomes third Cajun in as many weeks to earn SBC honors NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana’s Tony Sterner became the third Ragin’ Cajuns player in as many weeks to claim Sun Belt Conference weekly honors when he was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Sterner, who joined defensive backs Collin Jacob (Sept. 21) and Brent Gordon Jr. (Sept. 28) in earning SBC weekly recognition, picked up his first career award after he knocked in a 37-yard game-winner as time expired in a 23-20 win over Arkansas State. The Kingwood, Texas, native tied a career-high with three field goals – all in the second half – as Louisiana erased a 10-7 deficit at halftime. Sterner’s 38-yarder tied the game at 10-10 on the opening drive of the second half and a 25-yarder also knotted the game up at 20-20 with 5:38 to play. Sterner tacked on two extra points to extend his consecutive made streak to 55 dating back to last season, while also improving to 7-for-7 on field goal attempts this season. Louisiana (4-1, 1-0 SBC) will return to action on Saturday when it travels to North Louisiana to face Louisiana Tech (2-2, 0-0 SBC) in a renewal of a gridiron rivalry that dates back to 1910. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be available on ESPN+.
