Soccer: Second-Half Goal Lifts Alabama Past Louisiana, 1-0

Ragin’ Cajuns to wrap up opening weekend of Spring season at Mississippi State

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Taylor Carter scored the match’s lone goal just inside the 58th minute and goalkeeper McKinley Crone stopped five shots in posting her third shutout of the season as Alabama held off the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team, 1-0, on Friday at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
 
Louisiana (9-6-1), which was making its 2021 Spring debut, collected 12 shots off the Alabama defense but was unable to find the back of the net. Lizzie Mayfield led the Ragin’ Cajuns with three shots in the match with two on-goal with Rachel Sutter and Lucy Ortiz each recording a pair of shot attempts.
 
Lauryn Starwood held Alabama (4-5-2) scoreless with a pair of saves through the opening 45 minutes before Carly Dean took over goalkeeping duties in the second half.
 
Alabama would break the scoreless tie at the 57:01 mark when Carter took a crossing pass from Bella Scaturro and found the back of the net for her first career goal.
 
Five players – Mayfield, Sutter, Gwen MummertIzzy Wheeler and Alex Augustyn – each played the full 90 minutes for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Dean recorded three saves for Louisiana.
 
Louisiana will wrap up its opening weekend of the 2021 Spring season on Sunday when it plays at Mississippi State in an 11:30 a.m., match. The Ragin’ Cajuns will host McNeese (March 14) and Nicholls (March 18) during the spring before traveling to face Texas A&M (March 20) and Baylor (March 27).
