LAFAYETTE – With the majority of its contributors returning from a 9-8-3 campaign in 2019, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team officially opened fall workouts for second-year coach Lance Key on Tuesday in preparation of the upcoming 2020 season.
The top four scorers for Louisiana – Karleen Bedre, Gwen Mummert, Skyla Sykes and Una Einarsdottir – are among a group of 15 returning letterwinners that helped the Ragin’ Cajuns to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships for the first time in school history.
Bedre, the 2019 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Freshman of the Year, led Louisiana in goals scored (7), assists (5) and points (19) in her first season in a Ragin’ Cajuns uniform. She started 17 of 18 matches during the regular-season while logging over 1,300 minutes of action and scoring a point in six consecutive matches for the Ragin’ Cajuns.
Mummert, a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection and second-team USC All-Southeast Region pick, started in all 20 matches for Louisiana and played center back on a defensive line that helped produce the lowest goals against average (1.20) in school history.
The Berlin, Germany native scored four goals with one assist in 18 matches and set a single-season, school-record with four penalty kick goals.
Seniors Julianne DeBlieux and Ashley Newland join Einarsdottir and Mummert as team captains for the Ragin’ Cajuns with the trio of Jordan Higgins, Lauryn Starwood and Carly Dean vying to replace departed goalkeeper and 2019 All-Louisiana selection Mackenzie Lee.
Key, who enters his 14th season with a 218-29-20 record, currently ranks second among active Division I coaches in winning percentage (.854).
Louisiana is scheduled to open the season in early September and will play an eight-game Sun Belt Conference slate against its West Division opponents (Arkansas State, Little Rock, Texas State, ULM).
