Soccer: Ragin’ Cajuns Drop SBC Home Opener to Arkansas State, 1-0

Louisiana will host ULM on Sunday; will honor senior class in post-match ceremony

LAFAYETTE – Sarah Sodoma scored the match’s lone goal in the 25th minute and Arkansas State kept Louisiana in check on offense as it posted a 1-0 victory over the Ragin’ Cajuns in a Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer match on Thursday at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.

Megan McClure pitched her second shutout of the season as Arkansas State (3-0-0, 2-0-0 Sun Belt) claimed its third straight 1-0 contest over Louisiana (2-3-0, 0-2-0 Sun Belt), which played without senior captains Julianne DeBlieux and Una Einarsdottir.

Sodoma, who took four of the Red Wolves’ nine shots in the match, scored her second goal of the season in the 25th minute when her shot from 15-yards out got past freshman goalkeeper Lauren Starwood into the lower left corner of the goal.

Arkansas State limited Louisiana to a pair of shots in the match as Skyla Sykes’ attempt in the 16th minute sailed wide right while freshman Demi McCalliog’s attempt in the 69th minute was blocked.

Starwood, making her collegiate debut, stopped three shots for Louisiana.

Louisiana will wrap up Friends and Family Weekend on Sunday when it hosts ULM in a 1 p.m. contest which will be streamed on ESPN. The match will also commemorate Senior Day as the Ragin’ Cajuns senior class will be recognized in a post-match ceremony.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility will operate at a significantly reduced capacity for the 2020 season (unless state policy changes during the season). This will allow for fans and University students to be accommodated this season.

Should disruptions or modifications to the 2020 season occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Athletics will quickly communicate the adjustments through its social media channels and RaginCajuns.com. Additionally, the department will communicate any changes to specific entry and attendance protocols for home matches.
